Generals Beat TURKS in Ninth 4-3

6/18/04 – Written by Denise Wampler, JMU Communications Intern

The Harrisonburg TURKS (6-5) suffered yet another loss, this time to the Waynesboro Generals (4-7), losing 4-3, at Veterans Memorial Stadium, on June 18. The Generals jumped to an early lead, scoring one run in the first inning, as they took advantage of the rusty start by TURKS pitcher, Damian Salcedo (Junior, Oklahoma State), who put the first three Generals on base (One hit by pitch and two walks). The next Generals batter went on to single and give the Generals the 1-0 lead. The Generals went on to score again in the third. The TURKS first run came in the bottom of the third, when first baseman, Joe Kemp (Junior, Indian University) doubled, followed by an RBI single by catcher, Matt Weglarz (Sophomore, SW Missouri State). The TURKS went on to score again in the bottom of the fifth, tying the game at 2-2; however, a two run inning in the top of the ninth for the Generals, put Waynesboro back in the lead 4-2. The TURKS threatened in the ninth, as right fielder, freshman, Kevin Koski (Southern Illinois), lead the inning off with a double. Two batters later, second baseman, Corby Heckman (Junior, Indiana University), doubled to right-center, scoring Koski, and putting the TURKS down by just one run. The threat ended there for the TURKS, as the Generals pitching staff eliminated the next two batters, to end the inning and the game. The TURKS collected 14 hits on the night, compared to just six by the Generals. TURKS Koski and center fielder, Reggie Watson (Junior, Indiana University), lead the way for the TURKS; both going 3-5. Shortstop, Gered Mochizuki(Freshman, Yavapai College), added two hits in four at bats. The TURKS continue to struggle getting runners across the plate, as the TURKS left 11 runners stranded on the base paths. TURKS starter, Salcedo (0-1) went 8 2/3 innings for the TURKS, giving up 4 runs, on six hits, striking out 13, walking two, and hitting two. Scott Brune (Freshman, Iowa University) replaced Salcedo in the bottom of the ninth to collect the final out. Salcedo was charged with the loss; his first of the season. Winning pitcher for Waynesboro was Josh Deaver (Sophomore, Radford University). Generals DH, Mark Fleisher (Junior, Radford University), hit a solo homerun in the top of the third, his second of the season. The TURKS will look to bounce back tomorrow, June 19, as they play host to the Covington Lumberjacks. Game time 7:30 p.m.
