WEEKLY NOTES – JULY 7, 2004 Valley League Baseball News ——————————————– Derek Lutz leads the league with nine saves. Covington: This past week Brendan Katin (Miami) joined the team and had nine hits in 24 at bats. Katin has a .375 batting average with two home runs, seven RBI and seven runs scored. Matt Hancock (Oral Roberts) was nominated as pitcher of the week for the Lumberjacks. In eight innings of work against Luray on July 2, Hancock allowed only one earned run, eight hits and struck out 10. Hancock has a 2.63 ERA in four starts and 24 strikeouts. Front Royal: The Cardinals top reliever, Derrik Lutz (George Washington), has nine saves to lead the league and picked up three in the last week. In only three innings in relief, Lutz gave up four hits, only one earned run and had five strikeouts. Jon Skorupski (Florida) has only been with the Cardinals for nine games and has a .367 batting average with three home runs, six RBI and 11 hits. Harrisonburg: The Turks have won eight of their last nine games to lead the Southern Division. Joe Kemp (Indiana) was the key hitter for the Turks this past week with a .360 batting average including two doubles, two triples and seven RBI. Reggie Watson (Indiana) still leads the league in stolen bases with 16 in 17 attempts. Pat Caldwell (Yavapai JC) made two appearances this past week including a start against Woodstock on June 29 in seven innings of work and allowed only four hits, no runs and fanned nine. Loudoun: The Rangers have recently acquired outfielder Matt Street (Virginia). In the last week Rick Santo (Florida CC-Jacksonville) batted .462 with six hits and two doubles. Phillip Beall (Virginia Tech) batted .313 and leads the team in average. Pitcher Derek Antelo (Florida International) went 1-0 on the week going seven innings with five hits allowed, only one earned run and seven strikeouts for a 1.29 ERA. Luray: The Wranglers were 9-1 at one time. Newcomer Dee Brown (Central Florida) had a home run, two RBI and four hits in his first week with the Wranglers. Brian Aragon (Florida International) had five RBI in the past week and four doubles. New Market: Marion Knowles (North Florida) batted .360 in the last week with four RBI and five runs. Knowles is among the leaders in runs scored for the league. Charles Pippitt (UNC-Asheville) batted .400 this week with a home run, five RBI and three runs scored. Adam Frederick (Marshall) also batted .400 this week, including a 4-for-5 game against Front Royal on June 30. Staunton: Phillip Morrison (Mercer) made two appearances in the past week with a start against Woodstock on July 2 going nine innings while giving up five runs, only one walk and struck out eight. Drake Wade (Central Florida) went 5-for-17 and had a home run, two doubles, and six RBI. Quinn Stewart (Louisiana State) hit .429 with six hits, two RBI, and three doubles. All three players were selected to the All-Star team for the Southern Division. Waynesboro: The Generals top three hitters this past week were Brandon Selvog (Tennessee Tech), Mark Fleisher (Radford), and Matt Bransfield (Notre Dame). They hit for a combined 18 hits and all three were named to the Southern Division All-Stars. Pitcher Matt Fairweather (Catawba) was also named to the All-Star team and threw this past week for eight innings in one start and allowed only two earned runs and five hits. Winchester: The Royals won eight of nine games to take over first place in the Northern Division. One of Royals’ leading hitters, Bruce Sprowl (Louisiana State) batted .391 this past week going 9-for-23 with a home run, a double, and six runs. Sprowl also added to his stolen bases with three this past week to put him at 13 for the season. Pitcher Alan Stidfole (Penn State) made a starting appearance in the last week going seven innings on the mound giving up four hits, one earned run, and fanned eight. Woodstock: Kelly Edmundson (Tennessee) batted .318 this past week with seven hits, two doubles, a home run, and seven RBI. Edmundson came into the Valley League late and is among the leaders in many offensive catergories. Matt Mallory (Vernon R JC) made three appearances in relief this last week and went 2-0 with only three hits allowed and no runs in seven innings pitched. Alumni Short Hops: Arizona Diamondback Chad Tracy (Staunton) delivered the crucial hit that brought L.A. Dodgers’ bullpen ace Eric Gagne’s record for consecutive saves to an end at 84… Tom Walter, who played for Harrisonburg and later led New Market to the 1994 Jim Lineweaver Cup, has been named head coach at New Orleans after eight seasons as the head coach of George Washington… Florida Marlin Mike Lowell (Waynesboro) is on the National League All-Star team, while Arizona’s Steve Finley (Harrisonburg) and Juan Pierre (Harrisonburg) are on the NL ballot for the 32nd man…
