Another Rain Out For The Turks

7/2/05 – Turks Tidbits

Center-fielder Lucas Delong (U. San Francisco) couldn’t believe it as he looked on when the rains continued to come down. He was thinking about the three-run home run that he had just hit and realizing that if the downpour continued that the Turks game against Woodstock would be called and he’d loose his homerun. In the bottom of the first inning the Turks found themselves up 4-0 after the Delong three run homer and Jeff Carroll (Ohio State) scored on an error. All of the sudden the skies opened up and the rains came down. What had been a beautiful day soon turned into a full blown storm. While some fans took the opportunity to chat with the Turks, the smaller fans didn’t find the thunder and lightning or the blowing rains much fun at all. Soon the rain wasn’t the only water flowing…tears of frightened children could be heard above the downpour. After an hour of watching the lightning streak across the dark skies and the rains continuing to blow harder and harder the game was called. The calendar is starting to look pretty full and the Turks are seeing all of their remaining days off quickly fading away. Their game at Woodstock on Tuesday, June 28th was rained out and it will be made up on Monday, July 11th. Thursday night’s home game against Front Royal will be made up on Monday, July 18th. Last night’s game against Woodstock will probably be made up on Thursday, July 21st which is the last open rain date during the regular season. As much as Lucas Delong enjoyed hitting that three run homer and putting the Turks out in front early, he knows there’s always another night to hit the ball out of the park. The Turks face a tough road schedule this weekend traveling to first place Covington (16-9) on Saturday and second place Staunton (14-11) on Sunday. We’ll need all of those loyal fans to hit the road too and come cheer the Turks on to a couple of wins! July 4th will be a relaxing day off for the Turks. Many of the boys of summer are planning a trip to Washington to take in the famous D.C. fireworks. A few are staying behind for an appearance in the Harrisonburg Downtown Fourth of July Parade and then an evening of grilling and swimming at Coach Wease’s house. The Turks are back at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Tuesday, July 5th facing the Luray Wranglers (15-9). Game time is 7:30 p.m. Come out and support your Harrisonburg Turks!
