Generals’ Streak Halted

6/11/2006 – The News Virginian

By SAGE MERRITT News Virginian Sports Writer Sunday, June 11, 2006 After two scoreless innings, the Generals had a breakthrough. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough. Despite jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning, Waynesboro was handed its second loss of the season, falling 7-2 to visiting Harrisonburg during Saturday night Valley League action. The Generals (5-2) zipped through two-and-a-half innings of play, with starting pitcher Jon Dages striking out four batters and allowing no hits through the top of the third. Leading off the bottom of the third, Generals shortstop Robbie Hine stepped up and hit a high-flying triple that Harrisonburg center fielder Ryan Rachal couldn’t quite get to. With Hine in scoring position, Generals center fielder Adam White hit a bouncing line drive into left field to give Hine the chance to score. Right fielder Chris Aminos sent White home with a far-right double that bounced to the fence. The 2-0 lead seemed promising, but that would be the last time that the Generals would score, while the Turks’ onslaught was just beginning. Harrisonburg got its first run in the top of the fourth after David Dennis, who was ultimately 4-5 for the evening, hit an RBI double into left field. The Turks’ move into the lead came during the sixth inning, when designated hitter Matt Denker gave up a sacrifice fly to score shortstop Bobby Spain. Right fielder Ryan Hanlon hit an RBI single to put Dennis over home plate and give the Turks the 3-2 lead. The Generals will face Haymarket today at the KC.
