Turks Remain Red Hot

6/20/2006 – Daily News Record

Daily News Record Written By JUSTIN GERMAN Special Correspondent Harrisonburg Tops Winchester, 14-3 "Winning is contagious," said Harrisonburg coach Bob Wease. If that’s the case, this year’s version of the Turks is infected. Red-hot Harrisonburg beat Winchester 14-3 Monday to win for the eighth time in its last nine games. Harrisonburg (8-7) took an early lead on a strong offensive performance and held it with an equally effective defensive performance. "I look at this team and we’ve got great pitching, which has been super. The first few games, we didn’t have our guys, but now we’ve got them," Wease said. "We’ve got a great offensive team, great defense; the only thing I know we can’t do is run." Matt Baugh pitched a gem by yielding only three hits and no runs in six innings. The Arizona hurler didn’t allow a base runner until there were two outs in the fourth. Baugh didn’t overpower batters, instead confusing them with his curveball and changeup and forcing lots of foul balls without allowing the Royals to get a solid bat on many pitches. "It seemed like every time I was throwing a strike, they were swinging at it and fouling it off," Baugh said. "It’s weird because I know I don’t throw that hard, but at the same time I think I mix my pitches up well and I think that’s what keeps them off balance." Baugh and the Turks’ defense got a stroke of luck in the third inning on a bizarre play that helped keep the Royals off the bases. Winchester’s Phillip Jenkins hit a line drive up the middle that hit second base and sailed right to second baseman Josh Richardson, who made a routine throw to first for the out. "I’ve never seen a play like that after all the games I’ve watched," Baugh said. "After that play happened, I knew something was going right." Something also went right for Harrisonburg at the plate. The Turks scored six in the second inning and added another two in the third to go up 8-0. By the end of the third, every Turks starter had reached base at least once and seven different players had come across the plate. Clint Robinson (Troy) led the Turks by going 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored, two RBIs and a walk. Also, Ryan Rachal (Oklahoma City) was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored before he was replaced by a pinch hitter in the sixth. As a team, the Turks struck out only three times in 48 plate appearances. Victor Croglio (Richmond) led the Royals (9-6) by going 3-for-4 with a run.
