Turks Streak Snapped

6/27/2006 – Daily News Record

Daily News Record Written By Marcus Helton Staunton Stomps Harrisonburg, 19-4 STAUNTON — The Harrisonburg Turks and Staunton Braves came into Friday’s Valley League baseball matchup on two distinctly different rolls. The Turks had won five straight while the Braves had lost two in a row. By the end, it was hard to tell who was who. The Braves brought the Turks’ winning streak to a screeching halt, putting up 19 runs on 18 hits and seven Harrisonburg errors in a 19-4 win. "The best thing about this game is we get to come out [today] and start all over again," Turks manager Bob Wease said. "It just snowballed. That happens in baseball; it happens to the Yankees, it happens to us. There’s nothing to be upset about. We just didn’t come to play, that’s all." Notre Dame pitcher Wade Korbi turned in a strong outing for the Braves (6-6), allowing no runs on four hits in six innings of work, striking out eight while walking two. Louisiana State outfielder Kade Keowen led the Braves offensively, going 4-for-5 with three doubles and five RBIs. "We had good pitching and we were bound to hit tonight," Staunton manager Lance Mauck said. "We had five hits in the last two nights, so I guess this is what you see." The Braves put up four runs in the first inning against Harrisonburg starter Jimmy Marshall and six in the second against reliever Kris VanZant. They led 19-0 before Harrisonburg (5-7) scored four runs in the top of the ninth against Todd Ozog.
