Valley Baseball League Weekly Honors Southern Division Waynesboro General Justin Jenkins (Ridgeley, W.Va.) earns Southern Division Player of the Week honors. The West Virginia University Mountaineer hit .409 with nine hits, a triple, a home run, two RBIs, and five runs scored. Jenkins was fifth in the league in slugging percentage (.636), tied for second in runs, first in hits, and tied for first in total bases (14). For the season, he is batting .362 with 17 hits, two triples, two home runs, and seven RBIs in 11 games since joining the Generals. Covington pitchers Clarence Nicely (Milton, W.Va.) and Nick Utley (Madisonville, Ky.) share the Southern Division Pitcher of the Week award. Nicely, a product of Auburn University, worked eight innings in a 2-0 win over Staunton on July 4 in just his second league start. He allowed three hits and struck out two while holding the Braves to a .120 team batting average. Utley, out of Lee University, worked 10 innings over two relief appearances while allowing just five hits and striking out nine. He held opponents to a .156 average. Northern Division Luray’s Tyler Kuhn (Louisville, Ky.) was named Northern Division Player of the Week, joining Jenkins to give West Virginia University a VBL sweep of the Player of the Week awards. Kuhn hit .429 with six hits, one triple, two home runs, and four RBIs. He was fifith in the league in batting average, first in slugging (1.000), second in on-base percentage (.556), tied for first with Jenkins in total bases (14), and was the only league player with two home runs for the week. For the season, he leads the Wranglers batting .338 with 45 hits, six doubles, five triples, three homers, 14 RBIs and 24 runs scored. Winchester’s Peden Rucker (Lexington, S.C.) took home Northern Division Player of the Week honors. The USC-Aiken product went 1-0 in two appearances. He compiled a 1.50 ERA and .195 opponent batting average in 12 innings pitched with five strikeouts. His week included a complete game 3-0 shutout over division-leading New Market on Friday, July 7, in which he held the Rebels to four hits.
