Turk Tidbits Wells and Spain Earn Team Alcolades The 2006 Turks presented their team awards tonight. The Most Valuable Pitcher went to the "little guy with the big heart", Southern Illinois University left-hander Danny Wells. Standing 5-8 160lbs., Wells proved to be the solid, consistent go-to guy coming out of the bull pen all season long. Wells, a native of Plainfield, Ill., Danny finished the regular-season at 4-1 with a 2.04 ERA and two saves. In 20 relief appearances, he struck out 40 and walked 20 for an impressive 2:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio as the anchor of the Turks’ bullpen. Wells also allowed 11 runs, gave up only three extra-base hits and held opponents to a .214 batting average. Wells posted a 4.53 era in 32 appearances, 33.2 innings pitched with 35 hits, 24 runs, 17 earned runs, 17 walks, and 36 strike outs during his 2006 season for the SIU Salukis. Danny will be a redshirt-sophomore for the Salukis in 2007. The team’s Batting Champion Title and Most Valuable Player Award went to Bobby Spain of Oklahoma City University Stars. Spain, a sophomore shortstop from Norman, Okla., hit .357 with three home runs and 20 RBIs this summer for the college summer league team. Spain posted team-high figures in slugging percentage (.476) and on-base percentage (.446) during the regular season. Entering the playoffs, Spain has hit safely in seven consecutive games. He had an eight-game hitting streak earlier this season. Spain has 17 multi-hit games. Spain hit .390 with eight home runs and 54 RBIs this season for OCU. He led the Stars with 82 hits.
