Valley Baseball League Weekly Honors Northern Division For the second time this season, West Virginia University teammates Tyler Kuhn (Louisville, Ky.) and Justin Jenkins (Ridgeley, W.Va.) swept the Valley League Player of the Week awards. Luray’s Kuhn, a sophomore short stop, won the honors for the Northern Division after leading the league in eight offensive categories for the week, including average (.577), slugging percentage (.962), on-base percentage (.567), hits (15), and total bases (25), doubles (4), home runs (2), and sacrifice flies (2). He also scored six runs and drove in five with two walks and a stolen base. The .577 batting average helped push him to a .374 season average to capture the league batting title. Winchester southpaw Matt Yurish (Martinsburg, W.Va.) won Northern Division Pitcher of the Week honors, giving the WVU Mountaineers three out of four award winners. For the week, the 6’3” sophomore went 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA in two starts. He pitched a total of 14 innings with 16 strikeouts, eight hits (all singles), and two runs allowed while holding opponents to a .167 batting average. The highlight of the week was a four-hit shutout on July 22 against Staunton while striking out 11. Southern Division Waynesboro’s Justin Jenkins claimed Southern Division Player of the Week honors. He was second to Kuhn with a .500 batting average in six games. He also ranked in the top five with 12 hits, a .792 slugging percentage, .500 on-base percentage, two home runs, and 19 total bases. In addition, the junior third baseman scored six times, doubled once, drove in four, and had one walk. He finished the season with a .427 batting average but did not play in enough games to qualify for the league batting title. Waynesboro teammate Josh Moffitt (Goodlettesville, Tenn.) took home Southern Division Pitcher of the Week accolades. The sophomore right-hander won his only start, striking out 11 and allowing just four hits in six innings during a 7-3 decision over Haymarket on Sunday. For the season, he is now 3-2 with a 2.74 ERA in 46 innings. He has struck out 36, walked 17, and limited opponents to a .248 average.
