BASEBALL AMERICA IDENTIFIES TOP PROSPECTS IN VALLEY LEAGUE Baseball America came out with listings of the top prospects for 18 College summer leagues. There are a total of 195 players ranked in 18 summer leagues. Included in the listings were the 10 players who they feel are the best prospects in the Valley League. The top prospect in the league is first baseman Yonder Alonso. Alonso, who currently plays for the University of Miami, led Luray to the 2006 Valley Championship beating Staunton 3-2 in the best of 5 championship series. Alonso hit .283 to go along with 8 home runs, which ranked second in the league, in 99 at bats. He also drove in 22 runs and led the team in slugging percentage at .555. Ranking second on the list is Woodstock outfielder Blake Tekotte. Tekotte, who is a teammate of Alonso’s at Miami, racked up 29 hits in 82 at bats to lead Woodstock with a .354 batting average. He also drove in 16 runs and had a slugging percentage of .549. He got on base 46% of the time and was successful on five of his seven stolen base attempts. He ranked among the league leaders in home runs, batting avg., and on base percentage, but didn’t have enough at bats to qualify for league rankings. The third best prospect in the Valley League is Winchester pitcher Paul Burnside. Burnside, who currently plays for Auburn University, was named to the 2006 all-league team. He was ranked third in the league with a 1.70 ERA. Opponents hit just .198 against him in 58.1 innings pitched. Burnside was third in the league in strikeouts with 55 while posting a 2-2 record. He opened the season with a perfect game in his first outing against Front Royal. Ranking fourth on the list is Tyler Kuhn, the Most Valuable Player from the 2006 season. Kuhn led Luray to the 2006 league championship along with teammate Yonder Alonso. Kuhn dominated the Valley League statistically. He ranked 2nd in the league with .363 batting average. He led the league in slugging percentage at .561. Kuhn also led the league in hits and runs scored with 81 hits and scoring 42 times. He hit 5 triples, leading the league in that category, and added 13 doubles to rank him second in the league. Kuhn also had 125 total bases, which dominated the league as the next closest competitor in the category had 94. Kuhn is currently playing for West Virginia University. Brandon Dickson is the fifth ranked prospect in the Valley League. Dickson was named to the all league team, helping New Market to the best record in the league at 32-10. Dickson, a relief pitcher led the league in saves with 13. He had a stunning ERA of 1.21 allowing only 4 runs in 29.2 innings while striking out 33 opponents. He also tied for the league lead in wins with five. Dickson had the most appearances of anyone in the league with 26 while finishing all of those games. Dickinson is attending Tusculum College in Tennessee. The sixth player on the list of top prospects is Luray outfielder Jamie McOwen. He is one of three players on the list from the league champions. McOwen, who plays for Florida International, hit .289 in 197 at bats. He led the league in RBI with 44 as well as doubles with 17. He also socked six homers and was successful on 12 of his 15 stolen base attempts. Josh Dew of Harrisonburg is the seventh prospect listed. Dew pitches and plays third base for Harrisonburg. In his nine appearances as a pitcher Dew went 1-0 with a 1.98 ERA. He hit .198 to go along with 16 runs and 11 RBI. Dew is currently playing for Troy University. The eighth player on the prospect list is Waynesboro outfielder, Adam White. White, who plays for West Virginia, was selected to the 2006 all-league team. He had 46 hits on 128 at bats for a .359 batting average last season. White knocked in 12 runs and scored 25 times. Front Royal outfielder/ first baseman Jordan Karnofsky is listed as the ninth best prospect in the Valley League. Karnofsky, who plays for the University of California, hit for a .302 average. He socked 12 doubles to go along with 5 homers. Karnofski drove in 24 runs and scored 25 times. The final player listed is Harrisonburg first baseman Clint Robinson. Robinson is currently playing for Troy University. He batted .254 with a slugging percentage of .440. He knocked in 28 runs and scored 21 times.
