Spain gets SAC baseball player of the week, Super Star of the Week Spain hit .500 with two homers and eight RBIs last week. OKLAHOMA CITY – They may not call Bobby Spain “Bobby Doubles” for long. Spain has already hit a team-high five home runs this season. Spain entered this year with 10 career homers at Oklahoma City University. With an adjustment Spain has been making, Spain has been turning those line-drive doubles to balls hit over the fence. Spain, a junior shortstop from Norman, Okla., hit .500 last week with two doubles, two homers, eight RBIs and a 1.071 slugging percentage to earn Sooner Athletic Conference baseball player of the week and Super Star of the Week. “It’s just getting older and hard work with Keith Lytle,” Spain said, mentioning the OCU hitting instructor. “I’m getting more out of my legs. I’m getting lower in my stance. It’s nice to get off to a good start.” The Stars are leading the NAIA in team home runs, RBIs, run scored and slugging percentage. “Definitely with Ryan Rachal in front of me and Caleb Annesley off to a hot start, they can’t pitch around me,” Spain said. “I feel like we have nine three-hole hitters in our lineup.” Spain’s freshman year was the year OCU won the national title. “I was along for the ride,” Spain said. “I got to play shortstop as a freshman. It was cool. There were a lot of seniors on that team I looked up to. We won it for them and for Denney Crabaugh and Coach Lytle.” Spain’s dream would be to have dinner with his dad Bob, Michael Jordan and Ted Williams. “My dad and I are all about sports,” Spain said. “It would be neat to have us together to talk sports. I respect them. “Ted Williams would say things about hitting. He’s the best hitter ever. Michael Jordan is my favorite athlete ever. He has so much drive and competitiveness.” OCU utility man Alexi Ojeda came up with Spain’s nickname, “Bobby Doubles.” “My freshman year I hit a lot of doubles,” Spain said. “It’s kind of stuck.” More on Bobby: People say I look like: Cal Ripken Jr. Favorite singer: Jay-Z Three things I must have if I were stranded on a desert island: Glove, bat, ball Three people I would invite to dinner: Ted Williams, Michael Jordan, my dad In 10 years, you’ll see me: On a baseball field coaching or playing
