TURKS Pound Bandits

Harrisonburg Has 22 Hits in 19-2 Romp Written By Matthew Stoss Daily News Record Woodstock,VA – The Harrisonburg Turks hit the ball. They caught the ball and they threw the ball. Baseball, after all, is a simple game and the Turks made it look really simple against the Woodstock River Bandits on Wednesday night. Harrisonburg compiled 22 hits, made no errors, only allowed three hits and crushed Woodstock 19-2 in a Valley League Baseball game. "The guys cam out and played a great game," Turks manager Bob Wease said. "They’re playing well together." Together. Harrisonburg (2-0) scored in every inning but two, including a five-run seventh. The Turks blasted three home runs – one from catcher Mike Pericht and two from second baseman B.J. Wheeler. "It’s just a matter of seeing the ball and hitting the ball," said Wheeler, who finished 4-for-5 with four RBIs, four runs scored and two walks. "It’s just a matter of being comfortable in the box, and being comfortable all day." Jim Kennedy (1-0) started for Harrisonburg and pitched six shutout innings, gave up only one hit and struck out seven – most of which came on a high fastball Wease estimated was in the low 90s. Kennedy, a right-hander from Rider University, retired 15 of the first 16 batters he faced and the River Bandits (0-3) didn’t get their second hit until the seventh inning. Their first came in the second. "Jim Kennedy pitched a great ballgame," Wease said. "His fastball had a little giddy up on it. He threw his curveball for strikes and that made the fastball more effective."
