Harrisonburg Beats Winchester 9-0

6/21/2007 – Turk Tidbits

Written By Jessica Merrill James Madison University Sports Management Intern Harrisonburg, Va., June 21, 2007 – The Turks improved to 11-3 tonight with help from pitchers Jim Kennedy Jr. (Levittown, Pahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Rider) and Ian Reinhart (Holland, Indhttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Southern Illinois) who limited the Winchester Royals to just three hits on the night. It was zeros all around for both teams until the fourth inning when the Turks would score two runs. The clouds would begin to roll with the Turks bats in the top of the fourth threatening yet another delay of game or cancellation. The rally began with a walk to Turks’ shortstop Ryan Wood (Woodbridge, Vahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/east Carolina) by Royals’ pitcher Scott Shuman (Valdosta, Gahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Auburn). Designated hitter Andrew Franco (Destin, Flahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Appalachian State) would then groundout to first base advancing Wood to second. Catcher Mike Pericht (Orland Park, Illhttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Saint Joseph) would reach on a throwing error by Royals’ third baseman Joseph Sanders (Millbrook, Alahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Auburn), Peicht would reach third base on the error, scoring Wood. Turks third baseman Brett Stewart (Niceville, Flahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Appalachian State) would then reach on yet another error, this time fielding, made by Sanders, scoring Pericht in the midst. With weather still threatening in the top of the fifth, the Royals decided to follow suit and give the Turks a scare as well. Designated hitter Will Delawter (Frederick, Mdhttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Maryland -Baltimore County) would start things off for Winchester with a single to Turks shortstop Wood. Catcher Jared Barkdoll (Greencastle, Pahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Francis Marion) would reach on a fielding error by Turks third baseman Stewart, advancing Delawter to second. Peyton Seelinger (North Little Rock, Arkhttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Central Arkansas) would then draw a walk off Turks’ pitcher Kennedy, advancing Barkdoll to second and Delawter to third. Center fielder Jake Swint (Westerville, Ohio/Toledo) would then line out to Turks’ right fielder Robert Taylor (Ingram, Texas/Arkansas-Little Rock) who would then make the throw home for the double play, allowing Pericht to tag Delawter out at the plate. The Turks would go on to score two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, and then brake the game wide open in the bottom of the eighth scoring five more runs. First baseman David Dennis (El Cajon, Califhttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Oklahoma City) would lead off for the Turks sending a single into centerfield. Wood would draw another walk off this time Royals’ pitcher Matthew Smith (Centre Hall, Pahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Ohio), advancing Dennis to second. Pinch-hitter Justin Brauer (Davenport, Iowa/Iowa) would reach first base on a fielder’s choice, sending Wood back to the bench for the first out in the bottom half of the inning, advancing Dennis to third. Pericht would draw yet another walk advancing Brauer to second. Center fielder Alex Lyons (Orem, Utah/Taft) singled through the right side and would advance to second, scoring Pericht, and advancing Brauer to third. Brauer would score on an error by the first baseman as well as Dennis. Second baseman Travis Peep (Chandler, Arizhttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Arizona) would then single at the plate and advance to second on an error by Royals’ shortstop Patrick Wingfield (Winchester, Vahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Virginia). Peep would also advance to third on the error as well, and Lyons would come around to score. Peep would then score on a pass ball by Barkdoll. After scoring nine runs on just seven hits the Turks will carry their power into tomorrow when they face the Luray Wranglers at home at 7:30.
