Turks Beat Generals, 7-5 Written By Jessica Merrill James Madison University Sports Management Intern Harrisonburg, Va., July 23, 2007 – Tonight the Harrisonburg Turks moved to within two-and-a-half games of first place. It was scoreless through three innings tonight until the top of the fourth when once again the opposing team, this time Waynesboro, scored first. The Generals struck first with a single run, but shortly after the Turks would come from behind to score six runs in the bottom of the fourth. Both teams would score a run each in the fifth inning to make the score 7-2, but the game would then go scoreless for another three innings until the top of the ninth when Waynesboro would threaten with three more runs. General’s shortstop Thomas Nelson (Weaver, Alahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Tennessee Tech) hit a three-run homer off Turks’ pitcher Jim Kennedy (Levittown, Pahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Rider) to bring the General’s within two of the Turks. Big hitters for the Turks included shortstop Ryan Wood (Woodbridge, Vahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/East Carolina) who went 2-for-5 on the night with a run scored, first baseman David Dennis (El Cajon, Califhttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Oklahoma City) went 2-for-3 with a run scored, and catcher Andrew Franco (Destin, Flahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Appalachian State) went 2-for-4 with a run scored as well. Right fielder Robert Taylor (Ingram, Texas/Ark-Little Rock) was 1-for-3 with 2 runs scored, third baseman Brett Stewart (Niceville, Flahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Appalachian State) was 1-for-3 with a run scored and 2 RBIs, while left fielder B.J. Wheeler (Abilene, Texas/Clarendon) was 1-for-3 with a run scored and 2 RBIs as well. Starting pitcher Chris Chapman (Chesapeake, Vahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Miss. Gulf Coast CC) went seven complete innings for the Turks giving up 2 runs on 3 hits, while striking out 4. Garrett Parker (Duncanville, Texas/Howard) came in to complete the game with one out in the top of the ninth. The Turks will look to pull out a win tonight against the tenth place Fauquier Gators at 7:30 at home.
