River Bandits strike out 16 in extra-inning win over Turks

Written By Andy May, Broadcasting Intern Bridgewater College Harrisonburg- Behind a strong pitching staff and a key play in the fourth inning, the Woodstock River Bandits beat the Harrisonburg Turks 4-3 in 10 innings. Left-hander Chase Vaden (Liberty) started for the River Bandits struck out seven and allowing two runs in 6 1/3rd innings. First basemen Grant Escue (Bradley) made a diving catch to rob an extra-base hit saving two more runs and kept it at 3-1. Returning Turk right-hander Garrett Parker (Oklahoma City) pitched a solid seven innings, surrendering five hits, fanned four and allowed two runs. The Turks were lead by B.J. Wheeler (Oklahoma City) who went 1 for 3 with a RBI single and a sacrifice bunt. Brett Stewart’s (Appalachian St.) pinch hit single in the sixth inning knocked in the Turks final run. The River Bandits mounted a rally in the top of the tenth. Cody Brown (Tennessee) went 3 for 5 with one RBI and set the table for Cole Shelton (Memphis) to drive in the winning run with a booming ground-rule double to dead centerfield. Brandon Beachy (Indiana Wesleyan) who pitched the final two innings striking out four and allowing no runs, set the Turks down in order to seal the win. The losing pitcher was Justin Wood (JMU) (1-1) who pitched the final 3 2/3 innings striking out two, but allowing the winning run. The Turks (2-4) host the Haymarket Senators (1-3) tomorrow night at Veterans Memorial Stadium while the Woodstock River Bandits (1-4) travel to Staunton to take Braves (2-1
