Harrisonburg Bats Come Alive In Win Against Waynesboro

6/14/2008 – Turks Tidbits

Written By Andy May, Broadcasting Intern Bridgewater College Harrisonburg- The Harrisonburg Turks found their bats to end the seven-game losing streak beating the Waynesboro Generals 11-3. The Turks and Generals locked into scoreless pitching duel between Turk right-hander Jim Kennedy (Rider) and Generals righty Jeff Sinkowicz. Ryan Danbury (North Florida CC) broke the tie knocking Rhett Stafford home in the third inning. Danbury led the Generals going 2 for 3 with an RBI. The Generals led 2-0 after four innings. In the fifth inning Turks catcher Mike Pericht (St. Joseph) knocked a solo-home run to halve the Generals lead. Perichts’ home run seemed to spark a fire under the slumping Turks. In bottom of the sixth inning Brett Stewart (Appalachian State) hit a two-out, double sending two runs to the plate to take the lead. Stewart finished the game 1 for 4 with a double, two RBIs, and two runs scored. The Turks weren’t done there. Two batters later David Mann (Oklahoma City) belted another two-out double to plate two more runs. Mann was 2 for 4 with a single, double, and four RBIs. The hit parade was on. Harrisonburg plated 11 runs on 13 hits featuring hits from eight of nine starters. The Generals mounted a comeback in the sixth until left-hander Matt Chaffee (Arizona) made his Turks debut. Chaffee came into the game with the bases loaded and struck out the final two batters in the inning. Chaffee pitched a solid seventh and eighth inning allowing no hits and striking out five. John Vallen pitched a scoreless ninth for the Turks. The winning pitcher for the Turks was Jim Kennedy who is now 1-1. Kennedy recorded five strikeouts in six and 1/3rd innings. Sinkowicz dropped to 1-1. The Harrisonburg Turks (3-9) travel to New Market to take on the Rebels (4-7). Eric Thomas (Bethune Cookman) will make his first start on the mound for the Turks. The Waynesboro Generals (5-4) host the Woodstock River Bandits (2-8).
