Two VBL Squads Ranked, Exhition Event To Feature Region’s Best Summer Ball

07/09/2008 – Valley Baseball League Newsroom

In the latest national rankings of the top 16 summer teams in the nation by PGCrosschecker.com, the Luray Wranglers (20-8) currently stand at #5 and Waynesboro Generals (20-9) sit at #11. A special exhibition event has been scheduled to pit both squads against the nation’s top-ranked team, the Vienna Senators of the Clark Griffith League. Luray has won 12 of its last 14 contests to climb up the rankings and the Valley League Northern Division standings. That run included a nine-game winning streak. The Wranglers rank first in the league with a .273 team batting average and have slugged 32 home runs, 11 more than the next best total in the league. Luray also has a 2.94 staff ERA to rank second in the league. Jeff Jefferson (Liberty) leads the league in total bases and ranks second in hits and home runs while Travis Smink (VMI) anchors the pitching staff with a 2.00 ERA to rank fifth in the league. Waynesboro has won 11 of its last 14 games, which included a five-game winning streak. Like the Wranglers, the Generals hold a 3 ½ game lead in their division. Waynesboro is tied for third in the league with a .264 team batting average, however, it is the pitching that has carried the Generals with a 2.63 staff ERA. Adam Liberatore (Tennessee Tech) has been nothing short of dominant for Waynesboro with a 5-0 record and 0.81 ERA in 44 2/3 innings with 44 strikeouts and 10 walks. Jared Dobbs (Tennessee Tech) ranks right behind him in second in the league with a 1.06 ERA. The exhibition doubleheader will take place in Luray on Tuesday, July 15 beginning with Waynesboro taking on Vienna at 4 p.m. followed by Luray vs. Vienna at 7:30 p.m. The Senators hold the #1 national ranking for the second straight week and have dominated the CGL to the tune of a 25-3 record with a 6 ½ game lead in the standings. Vienna leads the league with a .301 team batting average and a 1.95 team ERA, nearly two points better than the next best team.
