Royals Shut Out Turks in Pitching Duel

07/16/2008 – Turks Tidbits

Written By Andy May, Broadcasting Intern Bridgewater College Harrisonburg- Winchester Royals’ pitcher Billy Morrison (Western Michigan) pitches a complete game shut out against the Harrisonburg Turks as the Royals win 4-0. The Royals made a statement in the first inning scoring two runs on walks and errors by the Turks. Tyler Townsend (Florida International) was walked home by Turks pitcher Jim Kennedy (Rider) in the first inning. Townsend finished the game 2 for 3 with a walk and a run scored. After the wild first inning, both pitchers found their grooves and started a Valley League pitcher’s duel that has been very common in the league this year. Turks pitcher Jim Kennedy pitched seven innings striking out six and walking five. Despite the Royals only managing five hits, they left 10 runners on base due to walks and errors by the Turks. David Mann (Oklahoma City) hit a double to start the bottom of the third, but was thrown out at home after trying to score on a wild pitch. Mann finished 1 for 2 with a double and a walk. The Royals built on their lead in the eighth inning as Kyle Galbraith (Western Michigan) reached base on an error and stole second. He was then knocked home by a Paul Bingham (IUP) single. Galbraith finished the game going 0 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored while Bingham went 1 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. The Turks were unable to mount a comeback in the ninth inning as Daniel Heatwole (Hagerstown C.C.) hit a two out single. The Harrisonburg Turks (13-21) have tomorrow off and travel to Woodstock (14-20) on Friday to take on the River Bandits. The Winchester Royals (19-15) travel to Waynesboro to take on the first place Generals (23-10).
