Eden’s Single Lifts Turks

06/11/2009 – Daily News Record

Center Fielder Helps Harrisonburg Beat Luray, 5-3 Written By Matthew Stoss Daily News Record HARRISONBURG – Ryan Eden took some time to ponder the biggest moments from Wednesday’s Valley League baseball game between Luray and Harrisonburg at Long Field. It didn’t take the Turks’ center fielder very long, maybe a couple of seconds, before he picked a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning. His two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning. “That big hit I had,” Eden said with a smooth grin. He wasn’t being cocky, though. The lithe 6-foot-1, 195-pounder from the University of New Orleans had a point. His two-run single – a hard hit groundball through the left side of the infield – broke a tie and rallied Harrisonburg to a 5-3 come-from-behind win over the Wranglers. “It was a fastball, and I knew it was coming because the whole day they had been giving me fastballs,” said Eden, who finished 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. “The first two at-bats, I missed it. But I knew they would come back with it because they probably didn’t have confidence that I would be able to hit the fastball, and I was just sitting on it. ” Eden’s single finished off a five-run seventh inning in which the Turks (2-1) rallied after trailing 3-0. When asked what Eden’s better baseball qualities were, Harrisonburg manager Bob Wease gave a broad answer. “I like everything about him,” Wease said, especially citing Eden’s range in center. Prior to the seventh, Harrisonburg managed just two hits off Luray starter Andy Moye, who pitched 6 1/3 innings and struck out six. The 6-5, 210-pound right-hander from Georgia Southern allowed four runs (all earned), four hits and two walks. Through the first six innings, he retired the side in order four times by spotting his fastball and circle changeup. He also mixed in his curveball. “I was just getting ahead with my fastball and letting it go and not worrying about it,” Moye said. “[The seventh] inning, I walked a couple of guys and it came back to bite me.” Moye gave up a double to right fielder Nathan Weglarz (St. Joseph’s) to start the seventh and walked the next two batters to load the bases. Harrisonburg then scored on an RBI single by shortstop Victor Croglio (Richmond) and a bases-loaded walk to pinch hitter Evan Stehle (Richmond). The Turks scored their third run on an error by Luray third baseman Jacob Wilson (Memphis), which Eden followed with his two-run single. The last run was the only run charged to relief pitcher Brandon Showmar (Memphis), who came in after Moye’s control started to go. “His pitch count got up there a little bit, but he still had good velocity and did some good things,” Luray manager Mike Bocock said of Moye. Offensively, a pair of Turner Ashby High School graduates led the Wranglers (2-1). Second baseman Josh Wright (Old Dominion) went 2-for-5 with an RBI double down the third base line in the fifth inning, and right fielder Daniel Bowman (Coastal Carolina) tripled to center field in the sixth. He later scored on a wild pitch. The win for the Turks ended a slump against the Wranglers. Luray swept the Turks in the regular season last year and ousted them from the playoffs.
