06/11/2009 – Turks Tidbits

Written By Matt Vanover James Madison University Intern

The Turks were back in action last night at Long Field Mauck stadium as they were able to string some hits together in a 5-3 victory over the Luray Wranglers.

The Turks starting pitcher Drew Granier (Thibodaux, Lahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Miss Gulf Coast CC) pitched a solid five innings giving up two earned runs on six hits. More importantly, Grainer gave up just one walk, which has proved to be an achilles heel for the Turks starting pitching this season.

Prior to last night, both previous starting pitchers had given up four walks apiece in five innings of work.

Last night, the Turks gave just four free passes the entire game. Last night, the Turks also found the recipe for success at the plate.

Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the seventh, Nathan Weglarz (Homewood, Illhttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/St. Joseph’s) led the inning off with a double to center field. Bobby Brown (San Diego, Califhttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Arizona) and Mike Schwartz (Tampa Flahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Tampa) were both able to draw walks to load the bases.

The next batter, Victor Croglio (Fayetville, N.Yhttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Richmond) came through with some timely hitting as he singled through the left side of the infield to score Weglarz.

Pinch hitter Evan Stehle (Richmond, Vahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Richmond) was able to draw an RBI walk which cut the deficit to 3-2, and kept the bases loaded.

Next batter Garret May (Marietta, Gahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/East Tenn. State) reached on an error by the third baseman which scored another run, and tied the game at three.

Ryan Eden (Slidell, Lahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Univ. of New Orleans) then singled to left scoring two to give the Turks the 5-3 advantage that they would not surrender.

Roman Lancara (Carolina, Puerto Rico/Bethune Cookman) provided relief at pitcher in the sixth inning for the Turks. After yielding a triple to the first batter he faced, Lancara zoned in to give up just one earned run on two hits in two innings of work. Chris Sorce (Pace, Flahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Troy) earned the save as he finished off the Wranglers in the ninth. Sorce received some help from middle reliever Gabriel Grinder, who also pitched one inning of scoreless ball in the eighth. (Zelienople, Pahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Southeastern) The Turks are back in action this Saturday June 13th as the host Winchester, 5 p.m. starting time at James Madison University’s Long Field Mauck Stadium on their main campus.
