Turks Shutout Waynesboro, 7-0

06/27/2009 – Turks Tidbits

Harrisonburg, VA. The Turks had an all around great game as they beat Waynesboro 7-0, giving them three straight wins.

The Turks earned their first shutout of the year with a combination of four different pitchers.

Ali Simpson (Campbell River, Province B.Chttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Bethune Cookman) got the start and pitched five solid innings scattering five hits. Simpson, a freshman at Bethune Cookman, earned his first win as a Turk in just his second start.

Manager Bob Wease was impressed by his team’s performance, and in particular the poise of the young freshman Simpson.

“Ali gave us the solid start we needed. He throws mid eighties with a solid curveball that were both working for him tonight,” Wease said postgame.

With such an array of young talented pitchers, Coach Wease feels confident in sending anyone out to the mound.

“For our team, pitching is clearly our strong point. We finally cleaned up the errors in the field after having 17 over a four game stretch,” Wease said with optimism. “I got on the guys a little bit, and it seems that we have turned the corner and are beginning to mesh as a team.”

The Turks had a repeat of last night when they jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

With two outs, Jack Posey (Leesburg, Gahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Florida State) got the rally started with a single to left. Bobby Brown (San Diego, Califhttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Arizona) followed suit with a single of his own to right. Next batter Mike Schwartz (Tampa,Flahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Tampa) loaded the bases when he drew his 16th walk of the season, good for second in the league in that category. Nathan Weglarz (Homewood, Illhttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/St. Joseph’s) then hit a chopper to third which was bobbled and then thrown over the first basemen’s head. Brown and Posey scored on the untimely error by the Generals.

The Turks opened the game up in the bottom of the fifth. With the score now 3-0, Jack Posey (Leesburg, Gahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Florida State) and Bobby Brown (San Diego, Califhttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Arizona) started another Turks rally when they once again had back to back singles. Two batter later, Nathan Weglarz (Homewood, Illhttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/St. Joseph’s) singled to score Posey. Another costly throwing error by the General scored Brown. With Weglarz now on second, Parker Brunelle (Snellville, Gahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Florida State) singled up the middle to knock in Weglarz. The Turks tacked on one more run in the seventh to make the final score 7-0.

Starting pitcher Ali Simpson (Campbell River, Province B.Chttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Bethune Cookman) gave way to Roman Lancara (Carolina, Puerto Rico/Bethune Cookman) in the sixth inning. Lancara pitched two scoreless innings of his own before passing the ball to submariner Gabriel Grinder (Zelienople, Pahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Southeastern). After Grinder pitched one impressive inning, Jack Posey (Leesburg, Gahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Florida State) made his Turks pitching debut. He kept the shutout in tack when he closed out the Generals in the top of the ninth.

The Turks are back in action tomorrow night at 5 p.m. The Turks will look to get their fourth straight win when they host Central division leader and top rival, the Luray Wranglers.
