Turks Get Swept by Fauquier in Doubleheader

07/05/2009 – Turks Tidbits

Written By Matthew Vanover James Madison University Intern While mother nature cooperated and allowed the doubleheader to be played, the baseball gods were not on the Turks side today. In game one, the Turks fell to the Gators 7-1. Turks starting pitcher Tim Kiley (Palm Harbor, Flahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Fla Gulf Coast) pitched just an inning and a third before coming out of the game with an elbow injury that has been nagging him much of the season. With the score 3-1 in the top of the fifth, the Gators scored four runs to extend their lead to 7-1. The Gators big inning was highlighted by five hits as they batted around. Fauquier catcher Ben Burgess (Brentwood, Tennhttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Tenn Tech) led the way going 3-4 along with solid play behind the plate. The Turks offense was halted by a stifling pitching performance from Kyle Putnam (New Windsor, N.Yhttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Marist). Putnam went the distance in the shortened seven inning game. He scattered six hits while surrendering just one walk. The only offensive run the Turks managed was a solo home run by Mike Schwartz (Tampa, Flahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Tampa) in the bottom of the second. Thomas Nichols (Georgia Tech) continued to swing a hot bat going 2-3 in the game. In game two, the Turks put up much better fight falling 4-2. With the Turks trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the third, Nathan Weglarz (Homewood, Illhttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/St. Joseph’s) led the inning off with a double to left center. Parker Brunelle (Snellville, Ga/Florida State) followed him up with a single up the middle. Next batter, Victor Croglio (Fayetteville, N.Yhttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Richmond) hit a sacrifice fly to center field which scored Weglarz. After the Gators tacked on two more runs in the top of the sixth, the Turks answered in the bottom half of the inning. Victor Croglio (Fayetteville, N.Yhttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Richmond) led the Turks half of the inning off with a single to left field. Croglio would make his way around the bases via passed balls. Unfortunately, Croglio would be the last Turk to cross home plate in the shortened seven inning game. Although the Turks fell to 12-12 on the season, they are still very much alive in the playoff hunt as the have swept division leader Luray in their four meetings. The Turks next home game is Tuesday at 5 p.m. when they will host Woodstock.
