Turks Skid Continues as They Fall to Woodstock, 4-2

07/07/2009 – Turks Tidbits

Written By Matthew Vanover James Madison University Intern The Turks fell to 12-14 on the season as they could not overcome an early deficit to Woodstock. Turks starting pitcher Clint Dempster (Perkinston, MShttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Miss Gulf Coast) got off to a rough start but settled in to put together a solid start. Dempster went seven innings giving up nine hits and four earned runs. After giving up six hits and four runs through the first two innings, Dempster shut down the Woodstock offense allowing just three hits over the next five innings. The Turks inconsistent offense reared its ugly face again today. The Turks posted eight hits on the day, but were only able to score two runs. With the score 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth, the Turks were able to string some hits together to score a run. With two outs, Garret May (Marietta, Gahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/East Tennesse State) laid down a nifty bunt to reach first base. Nathan Bryan (Andrews, Txhttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Oklahoma State) followed May up with a single of his own to right center. Next batter Raymond Quinones (New York, N.Yhttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/UNC Greensboro) came through with a clutch RBI single to score May from third. The next inning the Turks threatened again, but could not breakthrough. Thomas Nichols (Georgia Tech) led the bottom of the sixth off with a single to right center. Two batters later, after Jack Posey (Leesburg, Gahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Florida State) drew a walk, Bobby Brown (San Diego, Califhttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Arizona) singled to load the bases with no outs. Next batter Mike Schwartz (Tampa, Flahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Tampa) scored Nichols from third with a sacrifice fly to center field. The Turks inning ended soon after with two groundouts to the shortstop. With the Turks falling to 12-14 on the season and on the outside looking in, it is hard for them to not become frustrated. “I think we played well enough to win today. We hit a lot of balls hard, but couldn’t get the timely hits that we needed,” recalled All-Star Bobby Brown after the game. With the Turks pitching staff carrying its weight, the offense knows what it has to do to turn their season around. “We seem to get one or two hits an inning, but we are lacking that third or fourth hit to breakthrough,” said Brown. Although the Turks fell out of playoff postion, they are still confident they can make a run to get in the playoffs. “No one remembers how you start, but they remember how you finished,” said an optimistic Brown. The standings in the Valley Baseball League show a log jam with the Turks still in the thick of things. The Turks will be back in action at Long Field this Thursday evening at 5 p.m. as they will host Covington.
