Turks Struggle At Luray

07/15/2009 – Turks Tidbits

Written by Matt Wojay James Madison University Intern

Luray , Va- The Turks got roughed up tonight at Luray 11-0, failing on an opportunity to close the gap on Luray for the division lead. Coming into tonight’s game the Turks had not lost to their division rival all season, and also had outscored them head-to-head by almost a 2 to 1 margin, 32-17.

Ben Alsup kept the Turks bats quiet tonight by pitching eight strong shut-out innings. In those eight innings he only gave up two hits, and struck out eleven batters. Tyler Truxell came into the ninth to finish a game that the Turks would like to forget by striking out all three batters he faced.

Luray got to Aaron Luchterhand early in this game, as he pitched 4.2 innings giving up three earned runs. He was relieved by Ed Wakefield who went 2.1 innings, and also gave up three earned runs. Wakefield was then relieved by Gabe Grinder in the eighth who gave up one earned run.

Hitting and pitching were not the only problems tonight for the Turks. Sloppy play in the field also cost them as they had six errors on the night, four of them leading to runs.

The one time the Turks looked threatening at bat was in the sixth inning when it looked like they might start a two out rally. Center Fielder Ryan Eden got a base hit, which was followed by a double by the Second Baseman Thomas Nichols. But, it came to an abrupt halt when the following batter struck out.

The Turks get tomorrow off because of the 2009 Mid-Atlantic Classic at Regency Furniture Stadium, as the Valley League All-Stars go up against the Cal Ripken League All-Stars for the first time ever. Bobby Brown and Rayan Gonzales are representing the Turks in the Middle Atlantic Classic tomorrow evening at 7:00 PM. The game can be seen on the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN).

The Turks look to rebound at Woodstock on Thursday night at 7:30.
