Turks Woes Continue As They Lose To New Market, 4-1

07/18/2009 – Turks Tidbits

Written By Matthew Vanover James Madison University Intern The Turks returned home to Long Field Saturday night after a week on the road. Despite the return home, the Turks lack of situational hitting provided them with another disappointing loss to New Market, 4-1. Turks starting pitcher Garrett Parker fell to (0-4) on the season due to the lack of run support that has plagued his starts all year. Parker pitched seven strong innings allowing four earned runs on seven hits. Despite giving up the four runs, Parker handled the majority of the New Market lineup. The Rebels, unlike the Turks, did come through with a few clutch base hits at opportune times to spoil the start for Parker. With the score 2-0 in the top of the fifth, New Market extended their lead to four with some extra base hits. After Kenny Mickens led the inning off with a single down the left field line, Kevin Rufus and Seth Kivett followed him up with back to back doubles to open the game up. After it looked like the Rebels had finally gotten to Garrett Parker, he took control to stop the bleeding, which left the score 4-0 after five innings. The Turks lone run of the evening came in the bottom of the sixth. Mike Schwartz led the inning off with a single to left center. After next batter Nathan Weglarz drew a walk, Shaun Cooper singled to right center to load the bases. Unfortunately, the Turks only managed a sacrifice fly out of Parker Brunelle to score Schwartz. Despite another setback for the Turks playoff hopes, the team remains confident that they can beat anyone if they put an entire nine innings together. “It’s frustrating,” said 1B/DH Mike Schwartz. “I truly feel bad for Garrett (Parker), we never seem to give him any run support. Every time he pitches, we give him just a run or two of support and it’s hard to win like that.” With the playoffs on the horizon, the Turks realize that anything can still happen. “We just need to get some positive momentum and ride that into the postseason. You see that it can happen at all levels of baseball, whoever gets hot has the chance to win it all,” said an optimistic Schwartz. The Turks will look to turn this thing around tomorrow night as they take on Haymarket at Long Field Mauck Stadium at 5 p.m.
