Turks Crush New Market, 12-3

07/29/2009 – Turks Tidbits

Written by Matthew Vanover James Madison University Intern Harrisonburg, VA – The Harrisonburg Turks ended their regular season home campaign with an offensive onslaught as they beat New Market, 12-3. Along with the offensive firepower, starting pitcher Ali Simpson (Campbell River Province, B.Chttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Bethune Cookman) provided the Turks a quality outing. Simpson, who was named to the Valley League All-Star team a few weeks ago, went six innings giving up four hits and one run. Simpson gave way to Ed Wakefield (Larkspur, Califhttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Portland) in the seventh. Wakefield pitched the final three innings giving up two runs on two hits. The Turks offense got started in the first inning. Raymond Quinones (New York, N.Yhttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/UNC Greensboro) led the game off with a base hit to right. After Shaun Cooper (Tucson, Arizhttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Arizona) reached on an error to move Quinones all the way to third, the Turks were in business. Next batter Thomas Nichols (Georgia Tech) grounded out to the shortstop to score Quinones. With Cooper on third, Jack Posey (Leesburg, Gahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Florida State) grounded to third. Cooper raced home and was thrown out on a questionable call for the second out of the inning. The Turks tacked on more run in the bottom of the second. New Market answered with one run in the top of the third to make the score 2-1. In the bottom of the eighth, with the score now 6-2, the Turks put the game away by stretching their lead to 12-2. Daniel Heatwole (Dayton, Vahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Hagerstonw C.C), who was two-for-three with two walks on the day, started the big inning for the Turks with a single to left center. After Raymond Quinones (New York, N.Yhttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/UNC Greensboro) walked, Shaun Cooper (Tucson, Arizhttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Arizona) doubled to left center to score Heatwole and put runners on second and third with no outs. Thomas Nichols (Georgia Tech) walked to load the bases. The next two batters, Jack Posey (Leesburg, Gahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Florida State) and Mike Schwartz (Tampa, Flahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Tampa) walked to score two more runs. Two batters later Victor Croglio (Fayetville, N.Yhttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Richmond), who was three-for-five with three RBIs, doubled to left center to score two more Turks and highlight the six run inning. The Turks move to 20-22 on the season and still have an outside chance to make the playoffs. The Turks remaining two games are on the road against Luray, tomorrow evening, and Friday at New Market.
