Turks Alumni, David Eckstein Staying in San Diego

09/02/2009 – Turks Tidbits

David Eckstein was definitely a fan favorite back in 1995 and 96 when he spent his summer in Harrisonburg playing for the Turks of the Valley Baseball League. That popularity has followed David all through his professional career. The fans love the "Eck" wherever he goes. The 34 year old Eckstein may not be the most powerful player in major league baseball but he’s definitely got one of the biggest hearts and best work ethics in professional baseball. He’s often been described as the Energizer Bunny, "he just keeps on going and going and going". In his nine year professional baseball career Eckstein has played on two World Series Championship teams; the 2002 Anaheim Angels and the 2006 St. Louis Cardinals where he also won the MVP of the World Series. He was also on the National League All Star Team in 2005 and 2006 representing the Cardinals. David has posted career numbers of .283 batting average with 338 walks, 356 RBIs, 114 stolen bases. In 1,170 games he’s had 4,505 at bats, with 1,273 hits (205 doubles, 30 triples, 33 home runs, 1,617 total bases, scoring 635 runs). His MLB career has taken him two only three cities; 2001-2004 Anaheim Angels, 2005-2007 St. Louis Cardinals, and 2008-2009 San Diego Padres. The Padres just announced last week that they are signing David to another year contract. http://mlb.fanhouse.com/2009/08/23/padres-give-david-eckstein-an-extension/ 13 years have past since the 5’7" fiesty blonde second baseman (at that time) entertained Turks fans at the old Veterans Memorial Stadium. But time hasn’t faded those memories. David Eckstein still holds a special place in the hearts and minds of Harrisonburg Turks fans. Continued best wishes on your professional baseball career "Eck" from all your fans and friends back in Harrisonburg, VA
