Turks Victorious in Woodstock

06/12/2010 – Turks Tidbits

Written By Todd Jones James Madison University We all know sports seasons are typically roller coasters of emotion that cost no tokens; the only price of admission may be a few hairs off the head. This Turks season has started out no different, and after a few more dips than peaks in the season’s first full week the Turks have let their hands off the handle bars and are beginning to have some fun. So, still riding a feel – good victory after beating Covington 5-1 on Friday night the Turks strolled into Woodstock looking for their first win streak of this young season After a rather uneventful first few innings things started to heat up in the bottom of the 3rd. After a base hit by the River Bandits’ Zach Tobolowsky and a bunt by Derek Vigoa, 3B Scott Dalrymple (Oklahoma City) threw an errant throw trying to beat the runner to 1st base. The ball sailed wide and allowed Tobolowsky to score one of the River Bandits’ six runs in the inning. After another run was scored off an RBI single and two batters were walked loading the bases, the Turks made a pitching change from starting pitcher Joseph Hollowell (Yavapai CC) to Stephen Styck (St. Josephs). Styck had a rocky start to his night but would later settle down and help lead the Turks to the win. With the bases loaded Styck walked his first batter bringing in another run making the score 3-0. Two more runs came home after a ground ball rocketed past 2B Joshua Band (Rollins) followed by an RBI double hit into right field by Richard McVey bringing in another run to give the River Bandits an early 6-0 lead. The Turks closed out the inning after this and would come to the plate with a little added aggression due to the score. After 1B Patrick Savage (Auburn) was walked 3B Scott Dalrumple (Oklahoma City) stepped into the batters box and cracked a home run bringing the Turks within 6-2. With two on base Joshua Band (Rollins College) hit a double past the shortstop bringing home two Turks pulling Harrisonburg to within two runs of the River Bandits, 6-4. After two more outs retired the Turks bats the bottom of the 4th seemed to favor Woodstock after it’s first two batters were walked. With runners on 1st and 2nd base and only one out Chris Cowell hit a zinger to Connor Winn (Georgia Tech) who then tagged 2nd base for the double play and the inning’s final out. The River Bandits made a pitchiing change from starting pitcher Tyler Sullivan to Mike Swietanski in the top of the 7th inning. The score would remain at 6-4 with Woodstock leading until the top of the 8th inning. The Turks started out the inning with a double hit by the Turks SS Connor Winn. After a line drive by Austin Erb (Ashland) was caught by the shortstop for the first out, Joe Huber (St. Josephs) was walked and newcomer Reuben Sosa (W. Oklahoma) hit an RBI triple sending in two more runs and tying the score at 6-6. Terrance Jackson (Oklahoma City) then stepped up to the plate and knocked another RBI triple bringing in Huber and giving the Turks their first lead of the night at 7-6. As Jackson slid into 3B a scuffle broke out between Jackson and the 3rd baseman that had manager Bob Wease in the middle looking like the referee at a prize fight. Both dugouts cleared to support their teammates but the tension was quickly difused and the game would continue. The score remained the same leading into the bottom of the 8th when Stephen Styck threw two clutch strikeouts and a runner was thrown out at 1st base by Connor Winn (Georgia Tech) for the third out. After a double play and a strike out sent the Turks to the dugout the River Bandits would have one more chance in the bottom of the 9th to salvage this game. After a low fly ball was hit just over 2nd base, The Turks SS, Connor Winn (Georgia Tech) made a great running catch to gain the first out. Stephen Styck (St. Josephs) then struck out the next batter and 3B Scott Dalrymple (Oklahoma City) fielder a grounder and threw a laser to first base just beating the runner and securing the Turks first win streak of the season beating the Woodstock River Bandits 7-6. The Turks are away in Winchester on Sunday July 13th for a 6 p.m. game, also away on Tuesday, July 15th traveling to Luray to take on the Wranglers, and then back home on Wednesday, July 16th to host the Haymarket Senators.
