A ‘Savage’ Comeback

7/15/2010 – Turks Tidbits

By Todd Jones James Madison University Intern Luray, VA – As the season progresses into the latter stages its no surprise that the Turks are getting a few sprained gobblers and bent feathers. Teams throughout the Valley League are dealing with injury issues as a compressed 44 game season is starting to produce some wear and tear in their players. The Turks are not immune to the injury bug and after being bitten their fiery mid-June winning streak was turned to smoldering ash. However a reddish glow still remains beneath the coals begging for something to feed its dormant flame; I hear Wranglers provide great kindling. Harrisonburg traveled to Luray on Thursday night hoping to reignite their season while pushing towards the playoffs.

Luray struck first in the bottom of the 2nd inning. While sitting on two outs the Wranglers managed a base hit and two doubles which allowed two runners to score, putting the Turks in an early 0-2 hole. Drew Granier (La-Monroe) tallied one of his 11 strikeouts on the night to close out the inning and allow Harrisonburg the chance at redemption. That redeeming moment would come in the 4th inning as Patrick Savage (Auburn) cranked a homer over the left field wall bringing the Turks within one run of the Wranglers. A groundout and pop out brought Luray back to the plate but strong pitching and defensive stops from both ball clubs made for a quick ballgame. The bottom of the 5th inning was highlighted by a ‘Sportscenter worthy’ play from short stop Connor Winn (Ga. Tech). As a grounder zoomed over the red dirt Winn made a tough backhanded snatch, pivoted to face first base while leaping in the same motion, and threw a rainbow dart to 1B Patrick Savage for the out.

In the top of the 6th inning Savage was walked and Scott Dalrymple (Okl. City) dropped a base hit into center field. After Terrance Jackson (Okl. City) hit a ground out 2nd baseman Joe Huber (St. Josephs) followed up with a sacrificial fly ball to left field allowing Savage to score and tying the game at 2-2. Another pop out would bring Luray back to bat but it was 3 up and 3 down for the Turks and Wranglers up until the top of the 8th. In what was a deja-vu moment, Savage stepped to the plate much like in the 4th inning; again the second batter up, again with one out on the board, again no one on base- again Home Run. The Turks took the lead off of Savage’s second home run and Granier ‘bubble-wrapped’ the win helping to protect the 3-2 victory. Harrisonburg squares off against the Senators Friday night, July 16th at JMU Veterans Memorial Stadium, game time is 730.
