Senators Tough to Impeach

7/16/2010 – Turks Tidbits

By Todd Jones James Madison University Intern

Harrisonburg, VA Haymarket called the Turks number again this season, and again unfortunately for Harrisonburg no one was home to answer the call. Haymarket faced off against Harrisonburg for the third time this season on Friday night after winning the first two contests against the Turks. The first two innings came and passed quickly like a cool breeze in the midst of this heat wave. With Terrance Jackson (Okl. City) on the mound the game remained scoreless until the top of the 3rd inning when a two run homer was blasted by Yoandy Barroso giving Haymarket the early 2-0 advantage.

The Turks would come storming back in the bottom of the 3rd inning. After Reuben Sosa (W. Okl.) knocked a base hit, just beating the throw by the tip of his cleat; Connor Winn (Ga. Tech) was then walked making way for “Downtown” Bobby Brown (Ariz.) who cracked a 3 run homer over the right field wall, helping the Turks reclaim the lead 3-2. The Turks would hold the lead until the top of the 6th when the Senators’ bats awoke to make some noise. Haymarket brought in 3 runs off a walk and five base hits to start the inning, giving them the 5-3 advantage. Harrisonburg then made a pitching change to Gabriel Grinder (Southeastern), although Haymarket had no intentions of letting up. Another base hit and an errant toss past 1B Patrick Savage (Auburn) in an attempt to throw out the runner made the score 3-6. The Senators followed up with their last base hit of the inning into right center field, giving them 5 runs in the inning and a 7-3 lead. The Turks were unable to reciprocate the offensive onslaught from Haymarket and in the top of the 7th inning the Senators put two more runs on the board as Rudy Flores knocked a two run homer bringing the score to 9-3 in favor of Haymarket.

The score would hold at 9-3 until the bottom of the 8th inning when the Turks made a stand. Bobby Brown led off with a single, followed by Shaun Cooper’s (Ariz.) double into the left field wall. Scott Dalrymple (Okl. City) then came to the plate and hit an RBI single bringing in Brown and pulling the Turks to within 5 runs. An errant pitch past the catcher allowed Cooper to score for the Turks and later a groundout would give Dalrymple the opportunity to return home, cutting the Senators lead to 9-6. A couple of groundouts later would end the 8th and Harrisonburg held strong in the top of the 9th keeping Haymarket scoreless in the inning. The bottom of the 9th would be the last chance for Harrisonburg but after pinch hitter Brett Armour (Young Harris) was hit in the elbow and walked, three successive strikeouts followed and the Senators got their third win against the Turks this season. These two teams face off once more this regular season in Haymarket, July 29th. Harrisonburg hits the road tonight to face New Market, but will return home to JMU Veterans Memorial Stadium to face the Rockbridge Rapids on Sunday night, July 18th at 7:30.
