The One That Got Away

07/17/2010 – Turks tidbits

By Todd Jones James Madison University Intern New Market, VA Harrisonburg was on the road Saturday night to face off against the New Market Rebels. With each remaining game crucial for their position in the standings, the Turks were hoping for a win in what would be a tight contest throughout. The Turks got off to a fast start by scoring the first run of the game in the top of the 1st inning. After Bobby Brown (Ariz.) hit a single into right field and later stole second base, he was ushered home by another single into right field hit by Shaun Cooper (Ariz.). With Kurt Wunderlich (Mich. St.) on the mound and the Turks defense scrambling, Harrisonburg was able to contain New Market until the bottom of the 6th inning.

To lead off the bottom of the 6th inning the Rebels’ Jordan Owen was walked after he was struck by an errant pitch. Later as Owen was attempting to steal 2nd base, an off target throw from catcher Brett Armour (Young Harris) bounced past 2nd and allowed Owen to advance to 3rd base. A sacrificial pop out would later send Owen home, tying the score at 1 apiece. The 7th inning would see 3 up and 3 down from both squads and the score remained tied until the 8th. In the top of the 8th, with one out on the board, Scott Dalrymple (Okl. City) came to the plate and belted a home run blast over the left field wall giving the Turks what would be a short-lived 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the 8th inning Harrisonburg made a pitching change to Stephen Styck (St. Josephs); and with one runner on base and two outs a long fly ball was hit into right field allowing New Market to score, tying the game again at 2-2. The close of the 8th inning came seconds after the score as the batter was thrown out at 2nd base while attempting to get a double. The 9th inning would be a stalemate forcing the game into extra innings.

In the top of the 10th with one out and two runners on base the Turks’ Caleb Bowen (Auburn) knocked a grounder that was snatched by the second baseman who then generated a double play throwing the runners out at 1st and 2nd base. The bottom of the 10th ensued and began with two quick outs for the Rebels. The first out came on an impressive leaping catch made by short stop Connor Winn (Ga. Tech) and the second out quickly followed with a pop out caught by 1st baseman Bobby Brown (Ariz.). However the Rebels’ Jordan Owen was again hit with an errant pitch and walked opening up the door of opportunity for New Market. After a single was hit into right field Owen was able to advance to 3rd base and the next Rebel came to bat with two outs and two runners on base. New Market’s Dan Shafferman hit a hard grounder that took a bad bounce past 3B JJ Loker (USC-Aiken) and that was all the Rebels needed, as Owen was welcomed home by his raucous teammates and the Turks were left to lament ‘the one that got away’. Harrisonburg looks to bounce back tonight, Sunday July 18th as they return to JMU Veterans Memorial Stadium for some home cooking against the Rockbridge Rapids, game time is 7:30.
