Harrisonburg, VA – In back-to-back games, the Royals scored the majority of their runs in one big inning. This time Winchester scored five runs in the third inning and went on to defeat the Turks 7-1, ending the Turks season.

The Turks offense was held to one run on five hits due to the outstanding pitching performance of the Royals starter, Evan Cox (Central Arkansas). Cox pitched a complete game striking out eight Turks hitters, while allowing only one run. Harrisonburg scored their only run in the sixth when J.J. Loker (USC-Aiken) doubled and then scored after Connor Winn (Georgia Tech) doubled down the left-field line.

Cory Spangenberg (VMI) paced the Royals offense going 4-4 with two RBI’s, a stolen base, and a run scored. Winchester will play at Luray tonight to open the second round of the playoffs.

The All-Valley team was announced today, with Harrisonburg leading the way with three first-team selections. Shaun Cooper (Utah) was a first-team outfield selection; he led the Valley with 13 home runs. Drew Granier (Louisiana-Monroe) was selected first-team starting pitcher, going 6-1 on the season with a 2.97 ERA and he led the league with 84 strikeouts. Stephen Styck (Saint Joseph’s) was the third first-team selection for the Turks as a relief pitcher; he had a 2.51 ERA and led the Valley with seven saves.
