Summer League Baseball in Harrisonburg

03/03/2011 – Turks Tidbits

For eight weeks during the summer the best college players across the country come to the beautiful Shenandoah Valley in Virginia to showcase their baseball skills to local fans and MLB Scouts. College players that have completed their freshman year, is a sophomore, junior or redshirt senior is eligible to compete. Summer league baseball gives players a birds’ eye view of what life will be like at the next level; trying to stay healthy and in shape while playing baseball six out of seven nights a week, playing with wood bats, traveling on buses, and living with host families.

Summer league teams are all busy this time of year looking for host families willing to open up their homes to a college athlete for the summer. If you are a baseball fan reading this article and you have a spare bedroom, consider contacting your local team to discuss having a player live from the last week in May to the first or second week of August (depending on play-offs) as your guest. Teams ask that you allow your player access to the kitchen and laundry room. It’s up to the family as to whether they invite their player to eat with the family or to provide food for them. Players will show courtesy and respect for their hosts since it’s understood that the player will be following a different schedule than the family due to late night games. Each team has their own special events for Host Families. If you live in Harrisonburg and are interested in knowing more about the Harrisonburg Turks Host Family Program please contact Teresa Wease at Wease Auto Exchange by calling 434-5919 or e-mailing her at turksbaseball@hotmail.com
