New Market Downs Turks Written By Joe Doherty Daily News Record

New Market – Rebels center fielder Josh Haley said he never received a shaving cream pie to the face before.

That all changed when Haley (UNC-Pembroke) provided the heroics for New Market (20-13) in a 2-1 10th inning victory against the first-place Harrisonburg Turks (24-9_. Haley singled in Matt Ford (Hofstra) two batters after Tyler Gabey (King) had been thrown out at the plate by Turks centerfielder Colby Roberts (James Madison).

“It felt good,” Haley said about the pie to the face. “That was definitely the bigget hit I’ve had in awhile… He had two strikes on me and I knew he would throw me a fastball. I know he has a good slider, but fortunately I guessed right.”

For most of the night though, the Rebels were guessing wrong in the clutch situations. They stranded 14 runners on base and left the bases loaded twice, while also stranding the winning run on third in the ninth.

“It’s one of those things when you do leave so many opportunities, you’re just hoping your pitching staff can hold on to the lead,” Rebels Coach Corey Paluga said. “We did a hell of a job, as far as the pitching staff, keeping them off balance until we broke through.”

Starting pitcher Jacob Guengerich (Florida Southern) went six innings, while giving up six hits and one earned run. Then relief pitchers Josh Frederick (Mount Olive) and Ross Davis (Lander) came in to shut the door on the Turks the rest of the way, who stranded nine runners of their own.
