Meet the Team: Georgia Tech

Georgia Institute of Technology will be sending a trio of young freshman to Harrisonburg for their first summer of collegiate baseball but they won’t be alone.  Yellow Jacket leader junior, Thomas Smith will be returning to the Turks for his third and final season of eligibility. Smith will definitely be able to help his team mates feel at home in Harrisonburg.

          Ben Parr

Parr, a left-handed pitcher from Social Circle, Georgia has tallied up nine strikeouts in 12.1 innings pitched.  Parr has a 1-1 record coming out of the bullpen for Tech.  Coach Hall speaks highly of the freshman’s potential and sees him becoming more involved in the rotation as time goes by.

          Tanner Shelton

Shelton, a freshman left-handed pitcher from Woodstock, Georgia has appeared in seven games including two starts.  He has pitched 13.1 innings and already stuck out nine batters.  Like Parr, the Tech coach speaks highly on Shelton’s potential in the future and declares him as a nightmare for lefty batters.

          Brandon Gold

Gold plays third base at Georgia Tech and his hometown is Johns Creek, Georgia.  The righty freshman stands tall at 6’3 and has appeared in 19 games this year.  In those 18 games, Gold hit the ball 17 times totaling six doubles and seven rbi.

           Thomas Smith

Smith, a junior second baseman from Fort Pierce, Florida walked onto the team in 2012 where he earned All-Tournament honors in the ACC.  In 2014, Smith boasts a batting average of .349 through the first 23 games.  He also has three stolen bases and holds a perfect fielding percentage at second.  Thomas Smith returns to the Turks for his third and final eligible season with the Turks.  Smith was a very valuable player on the 2012 Turks Championship team and the 2013 Turks Pennant Winner.  He is versatile and can play at a number of positions.  In 2013 he posted a .341 batting average in 39 games. He had 45 hits, 10 doubles, 3 triples, 2 home runs, 23 rbis and had 4 stolen bases.  Smith was named the Turks Week 6 Player of the Week and Week 7 Co-Player of the Week.  He was named to the 2012 and 2013 Valley Baseball All Star teams and to the 1st Team 2013 All Valley League Team.  Turks fans look forward to another exciting summer of baseball with Thomas Smith.
