Turks Sweep Double Header

New Market- The Turks were back on the road once again, as they traveled to New Market to face the Rebels. Harrisonburg posted a road win Wednesday night against Aldie after scoring late in the game. Kevin Lewallyn (Duke) was given the ball in the first of two seven-inning games. Starting on the mound for the Rebels was Sean Cunningham.

The Turks started a two-out rally in the first inning. Daniel Nichols (Georgia) worked himself a walk before Matt Rose (Georgia State) was hit on the first pitch he saw to place runners on first and second. Eric Kalbfliesh (UNCG) roped a line drive up the middle to score Nichols from second. After the first half-inning, it was 1-0.

Joey Roach (Georgia State) started the second inning with a double. Steven McLean (Baylor) followed behind Roach with a walk. Thomas Smith (Georgia State) continued his hot hitting with a double, scoring Roach from second and moving McLean to third.

Lewallyn was not able to continue pitching after the first inning. In to replace him on the mound was Kalbfliesh, who pitched a shut-out second inning. He ran into trouble in the third inning. With two outs, New Market’s Jason Smith laced a double just out of the reach of the Turks center fielder. Cody Acker was the next hitter and he hit a single through the right side to score Smith. After three innings, the score was 2-1.

Christopher Barr (Miami) and Steven McLean (Baylor) roped singles to start the fourth inning. Thomas Smith hit a short fly ball to the short stop. He picked up the ball a tried to flip the ball to second. The ball slipped and flew into right field. The error allowed Barr to score from second. Then, with runners one second and third, Thomas Spitz (Wingate) hit a ground ball to score McLean from third. Daniel Nichols continued his hot hitting and smashed a base hit up the middle to score Smith. Going into the bottom of the fourth, the score was 5-1.

Tanner Dofflemyer scored in the bottom of the sixth inning after Tim Kiene smashed a ball at McLean at short stop. McLean fielded the ball and fired it to second. However, Thomas Smith could not handle the throw allowing Dofflemyer to score. Going into the top of the seventh, the score was 5-2.

The Rebels were able to get a quick two outs in the seventh inning before running into trouble. Eric Kalbfliesh roped a base hit through the right side of the field. Jesse Baker (UTSA) smoked a home run to center field to make the score 7-2.

Kalbfliesh pitched his way to a win while Sean Cunningham received the loss.

GAME 2

Brett Morgan was given his first start of the year for the Turks in game two. Bryan Carr received the ball for the Rebels.

Morgan ran into trouble in the first inning. After two quick walks, Darian Carpenter roped a ball to centerfield to score the runner from second. He walked the next hitter to load the bases with no outs. Morgan got the next hitter to hit into a double play, but that allowed another run to score. After one inning, the score was 2-0 Rebels.

The Rebels pushed another run across in the second inning after a lead off walk to Tray Roberts. He scored on a wild pitch to Tanner Dofflemyer.

The Turks cut the lead down in the third inning. Steven McLean was able to reach base by an over throw that went out of play allowing him to reach second. Thomas Spitz (Wingate) reached on a walk. Daniel Nichols brought McLean home on a base hit up the middle. Matt Rose followed Nichols with another single to bring home Spitz. Going into the bottom of the third the score was 3-2.

Thomas Smith hit a 3 run home run that gave the Turks the lead in the sixth inning. A double by Mitch Matulia (UTSA) and a walk to McLean gave Smith the opportunity to cash in the runs. The Turks took a 5-3 lead going into the bottom of the sixth.

The Turks were able to start another two out rally in the seventh. Jesse Baker flared a pop fly right over the first basemen for a single. Christopher Barr was hit on the ankle on the first pitch he saw to place runners on first and second. Mitch Matulia then cracked a double to score Barr and Baker to put the Turks up 7-3.

Morgan pitched himself to a win while only giving up one hit. Logan Onda pitched the last inning to pick up another save. After Thursday the Turks move to 27-13 on the year and increase their lead in first in the league.
