Charlottesville, VA –  If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.

In desperate need of a victory, the Harrisonburg Turks (4-9) followed the timeless expression en route to a 5-3 victory over the Charlottesville TomSox (8-4). Despite falling behind 3-0 after the first inning, starting pitcher Mason Studstill and company rallied to hold the South division leaders scoreless in the final eight frames.

After a rainout on Friday night, the Turks found a way to combine solid hitting with quality pitching and earn their second victory of the season over the TomSox. While the potent 1-2 punch of Ty Andrus and Joe Lytle normally strikes fear into opposing pitchers, it was the bottom third of the Turks’ lineup that will keep the TomSox pitchers sleepless after tonight’s contest.

Zach Kuchmaner, Tevin Mitchell and Tanner Dofflemyer combined for seven hits, four runs scored and two RBIs. Mitchell, in his first game with Harrisonburg from UC Santa Barbara, went 2-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Chris Farish, in his first summer action after coming to Harrisonburg from Wake Forest, fired three no-hit innings in relief to secure the victory after Studstill threw six quality frames. After allowing three first-inning runs, Studstill kept the TomSox scoreless in the next five, while striking out five batters on the night.

Despite limping to a 3-9 start, the new arrivals have the Turks feeling confident. Mitchell, who played shortstop in the victory, will add infield depth to a Harrisonburg team that made 10 errors in its previous two losses.

With more defensive depth as well as new Wake Forest pitchers Carter Bach and Farish, the Turks hope to start a winning streak after falling to last place in the South.
