Three Wingate Bulldogs Head to Harrisonburg This Summer

Wingate Coach Jeff Gregory will be sending three of his Bulldogs to join the 2018 Turks, sophomore right-hand pitchers Josh Karlin, and Alex Rodriguez and freshman outfielder Justin Guy.  Karlin, 6’1″ 170 from Waxhaw, NC, Rodriguez, 6′ 165 pounds from Kannapolis, NC and 5’11” 170 pound Justin Guy from Greensboro, NC.

Karklin made eight appearances out of the Wingate bullpen during his freshman season, compiling a team-best 2.84 ERA, struck out 10 in 12 2/3 innings of work, holding opponents to a .250 batting average. So far this spring he has a 1-0 record with 1 save in 2.2 innings of work.

Rodriguez made 14 appearances during his first season at Wingate including five starts, registering a 6.08 ERA in 26 2/3 innings, collecting 26 strikeouts.

Guy graduated from Southeast Guilford high school, a center fielder, has great speed, can get on and the around the bases in a hurry and he is so very quick to the ball, in the outfield.

The Turks organization and fans welcome these Wingate Bulldogs to Harrisonburg and look forward to an exciting summer of Valley League baseball with them.

Wingate has provided the Turks with outstanding players over the years. 2017 Turks All-Star and VBL MVP. in the Southern Collegiate Showcase outfielder Ty Andrus. Andrus finished the regular season with a .348 batting average and a .413 on base percentage. 2015 Turks All-Star outfielder and VBL MVP Shane Billings was selected in  13th round of the 2016 MLB draft also by the St. Louis Cardinals.  With two years under his belt in the minors Billings has posted an overall .276 batting average and a .307 on base percentage.  2014 Turks VBL All-Star outfielder Thomas Spitz was selected in the 32nd round of the 2015 MLB Player draft by the St. Louis Cardinals. Playing in the minor leagues for the last four years Spitz has an overall .248 batting average and a .334 on base percentage.  2011 Turks VBL All-Star outfielder Dodson McPherson earned first team All-American honors from the NCBWA and the ABCA, while earning second team accolades from Daktronics. One of eight semi-finalists for the Tino Martinez Award, McPherson earned SAC and Region Player of the Year honors, while also being named the SAC Male Athlete of the Year. 2012 Turks first baseman Brian Yeung earned second team All-American honors from the ABCA and third team accolades from Daktronics. He led the nation in doubles during his sophomore year.
