Cardinals Fly Over Turks

By Dave Norman
Turks Broadcaster

FRONT ROYAL–In an effort to end a 4-game losing streak, Harrisonburg traveled to Front Royal to take on the North Division leading Cardinals at Bing Crosby Stadium. The Cardinals would have none of that plan, trouncing the Turks 15-3.

Alex Carpenter (Florida State) started for the Turks. Finesse Lefty Andrew Brighton was on the hill for Front Royal. The Cardinals plated two runs in the 1st without a hit on two walks and error and wild pitch.

In the 3rd, Harrisonburg answered back to tie, with two out RBI singles by Paul Castillo (Jacksonville) and Orryn Veillon (New Orleans)

The Cardinals immediately grabbed back the lead with a 4-run uprising to lead 6-2 after 3 innings.

Lefty Daniel Brandon (Longwood) relieved Carpenter and worked a scoreless 4th.

Each team scored a run in the 5th as Kyle Johnson (Ryder) singled and later scored on a single by Elian Merejo (Eastern Florida) to trim the Cardinals lead to 6-3.

Alex Briggs lead-off home run to left made it 7-3 Front Royal. Right-hander Nick Yoder relieved Brighton.

In the home half of the 6th, the Cardinals chased Brandon with a one-out walk and single. Kevin Mintz (UNC-Wilmington) induced a fly out before surrendering a walk, wild pitch and bloop single to make it 10-3.

In the 7th, Yoder set down the Turks in order. Lefthander Eli Ellington (UNC-Charlotte) took the mound for Harrisonburg, allowing two hits and a walk but no runs as right fielder Cameron Irvine (Virginia Tech) threw out a Cardinal at the plate to end the threat.

In the Turks 8th, after a lead-off walk to Veillon, Yoder fanned the next three hitters. On the night, Turks pitchers issued 13 walks and built many opportunities which Cardinal hitters thrive on.

Ellington walked three to load the bases with one out, Jake Lane (Florida Tech) relieved him, retired one, then surrendered a three-run double to Andrew Burden make it 14-3. Another double by Christian Avant made it 15-3.

Brighton (3-1) was the winning pitcher for the North Division leading Cardinals (15-9) who swept the season series with Harrisonburg. Carpenter (0-1) took the loss for the Turks.

The Turks (13-14) are home on Friday hosting the Waynesboro Generals. It is a Med Express Family Fun Night so come early, bring the kids and enjoy games and face painting.
