Trio of Wingate Bulldogs to Play at the VET

We are so excited to have one of our solid Wingate Bulldog hurlers return to Harrisonburg. Senior right-hand pitcher, Alex Rodriguez had a productive 2018 season for the Turks and will take the mound again at JMU Veterans Memorial Park. Rodriguez, a 6-0, 175 pound business management major is from Kannapolis, NC. Last summer for the Turks he tossed 28.2 innings with 29 strikeouts. Rodriguez has a very successful 2018 spring for Wingate. He posted a 6-1 record with a 2.43 ERA and a save, while striking out 43 and walking 14 in 29 2/3 innings of work and holding his opponents to a .204 batting average.

Also joining their Wingate teammates in Harrisonburg are McCann Mellet and Jed Bryant. McCann Mellet,  a  5’9” 195 pound senior infielder from Charlotte, NC was a force at second for the Bulldogs last spring. He started in 42 of the 46 games he appeared in, leading the team with a .361 batting average, second on the team with 13 doubles, third with 43 RBI’s. He posted a .589 slugging percentage and .474 on-base percentage. The speedster stole eight bases in 10 attempts. Mellet also earned second team All-SAC honors. We look forward to having Mellet in the Turks infield this summer.

Wingate catcher/outfielder Jed Bryant is 5-11 185 pound, a health and physical education major from Lexington, NC. The right-hand catcher is going to add depth offensively and defensively for the Turks. Bryant had 21 at bats with 4 runs, 5 hits, 3 rbis, and 3 home runs for the Bulldogs last spring. He had a 1.000 fielding percentage with 18 put outs and 1 assist.

We welcome this trio of  Wingate Bulldogs to Harrisonburg and look forward to them playing at JMU Veterans Memorial Park this summer.
