On April 2, 2020 an official announcement was released by Commissioner Bruce Alger of the Valley Baseball League cancelling the 2020 season.
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused many changes in our country. President Donald Trump has asked for “social distancing” for all citizens. Virginia Governor Ralph Northam declared a stay-at-home order until June 10th for the state. The Valley Baseball League Board of Directors voted after consulting with all eleven teams and determined that for the safety of all involved; the players, coaches, host families and fans, that the 2020 season would be cancelled.
We thank all of our players that had committed to playing for the Harrisonburg Turks at Veterans Memorial Park. We encourage them to continue their college work out plan at their homes and to be prepared for the college season as they return to school in the fall. We hope to have many of them to return to Harrisonburg to play the 2021 season.
We also extend deep appreciation to all of the businesses that committed and had already paid their sponsorship dollars. The Turks contacted each of them with the option to return their money or carry it over to the 2021 season. Even in the midst of a financial crisis resulting from COVID-19 all but one sponsor said to keep their sponsorship dollars for next season. Bob Wease, owner/general manager/coach of the Turks was truly touched and taken back by the business community’s dedication to the Turks.
We will miss all of great fans this summer. We hope that everyone stays safe and healthy through this COVID-19 pandemic and we look forward to seeing all of you again soon!
We want to also let you know that Graham Knight, VBL Director of Broadcasting, has developed a Valley Baseball League YouTube Channel. For the next four months Graham will be playing a Podcast at 7:00 game time each night. These podcasts will be interviews from coaches, owners, former players, features sharing news and history of the VBL. So be sure to tune in to get your summer league baseball fix. The Turks will share these podcasts on our FaceBook page each day but you should subscribe to the Valley Baseball League YouTube Channel.
