Tracking the Turks: Week of March 1-7

Over the past week, several Turks performed well on the diamond as college baseball teams across the country got their season underway.

On the Mound

Mac Callari

Mac Callari (Wingate) made the start for the Bulldogs, pitching 6.2 innings and allowing just one earned run and three hits in Wingate’s 4-2 victory over Lincoln Memorial on Saturday. He struck out six batters in a tough-luck no-decision.

Season stats: 2.60 ERA, 17.1 IP, 12 K, .153 B/AVG 

Jared Donalson (Georgia Southwestern State) was the starter for the Hurricanes on Saturday, as he pitched 4.2 innings while not walking a single batter. Though he did give up five runs, only two were earned in the Canes’ 6-5 win over North Georgia.

Season stats: 3.38 ERA, 16 IP, 8 K

Alex Munroe (Miami (FL)) pitched a scoreless inning of relief in Miami’s setback against NC State on Friday.

Season stats: 0.00 ERA, .000 B/AVG

Garret Simpson (Eastern Kentucky) was effective in a long-relief role on Saturday, allowing one run in 3.1 innings of work in his team’s extra-innings loss to East Tennessee State.

Season stats: 4.66 ERA, 9.2 IP, 10 K, .156 B/AVG

Adam Riggleman (Glenville State) got the starting nod for the Pioneers last Tuesday, yielding two earned runs in five innings. He struck out five batters and earned the win in Glenville State’s 10-6 victory over visiting Ohio Valley.

Season stats: 3.60 ERA, 5 IP, 5 K, .286 B/AVG

In the Batter’s Box

Logan McNeely (Wingate) did it all on Wednesday, going 3-for-4 with 2 RBI, a walk, and a sac fly in the Bulldogs’ 10-4 win over Belmont Abbey. McNeely worked behind the plate, catching for five different Wingate pitchers, who collectively struck out 12 hitters while walking just two.

Season stats: .194 AVG, 3 RBI, 7 BB

Michael Dansky (Wingate) was stellar in Wingate’s weekend series against Lincoln Memorial, hitting 4-for-13 over four games with five RBI and two homers, including a three-run blast in the third inning of Saturday’s 11-7 victory. The Bulldogs took three of the four from LMU.

Season stats: .419 AVG (leads team), 3 HR, 8 RBI, .742 SLG

Jordan Sweeney

Jordan Sweeney (Rutgers) made the start at first base on Saturday as Rutgers opened their season last week in Big Ten play. Sweeny went 2-for-5 with 4 RBI and two runs scored, including a three-run double in the Scarlet Knight’s 16-1 romp over Minnesota. The following day, he went 3-for-5 with another RBI, though the team fell to the Golden Gophers 13-8.

Season stats: .294 AVG, 1 HR, 6 RBI, .529 SLG

Clay Lockett (Southern Nazarene) performed well in the Crimson Storm’s setback to Southeastern Oklahoma on Saturday, going 2-for-4 with a solo homer to lead off the game. He also had a double and scored a run in Friday’s contest.

Season stats: .241 AVG, 1 HR, 4 RBI

Connor Hartigan

Conor Hartigan (James Madison) had a monster day at the plate against Bowling Green, going 2-for-3 and collecting four RBI, highlighted by a three-run homer in the Dukes’ 15-4 triumph over the Falcons on Saturday. He also stole a base.

Season stats: .333 AVG, 1 HR, 5 RBI, .611 SLG, 1.011 OPS (leads team)

Bryce Safferwich (James Madison) recorded two doubles and an RBI as JMU fell to Bowling Green 10-6 on Friday.

Season stats: .375 AVG, 2 RBI, 1.025 OPS
