The Harrisonburg Turks came back from a 7-1 deficit to defeat the Covington Lumberjacks 8-7 in extra innings Friday at Casey Field. The win moves them to 3-2 this season.

Sam Schner (Wingate) stole home in the top of the first for the first run of the game. Covington’s Luke Arnold (Wright ST U) hit an RBI double to right field to tie the game at one in the bottom of the first. Nate Stocum (W. Carolina U) followed up with another RBI double to put the Lumberjacks up 2-1. The Lumberjacks threw out Garrett Warden (WV Tech) and Blake Butcher (San Diego State) for a double play and struck out Schner to end the top of the third. The Turks kept the Lumberjacks in check in the bottom of the third by getting two flyouts and tagged Carlos Castillo out trying to steal third.

The Turks notched their second hit of the game in top of the fourth as Matt mp (UNCG) drove one to left field for a leadoff single. He got to third courtesy of a one-out double from Mitch Farris (Wingate). But the Turks weren’t able to capitalize as another strikeout and a Keflyout ended the inning.

Arnold got on base again in the bottom of the fourth on a one-out single to left field Covington’s fifth hit of the game. Stocum got Arnold to third after hitting a single to right field but a strikeout from pitcher Andrew Williams (Georgetown) and a groundout got the Turks out of the inning.

Warden hit a one-out double in the top of the fifth. He got to third on a flyout but was unable to
score after another flyout ended the inning. Covington’s John Urena (Asa Miami JC) hit a two-out single to center field in the bottom of the fifth but a groundout left him stranded. Covington continued to get hits as Cooper George (Mount Olive JC) smacked a single to right field in the bottom of the sixth. Arnold also hit a single to right field to put runners on the corners with no outs. George scored following an RBI single from Justin Breen (Bossier Parish CC).

Joshua Rodriguez (Hinds JC) hit an RBI single to give the Lumberjacks a 4-1 lead. Covington
continued to extend its lead in the bottom of the sixth with RBIs from Michael Piulats (ASA
Miami JC) and Castillo. Castillo scored on an RBI from Evan Wickeri (Barry U) — Covington’s
fifth straight RBI.

Christian Ficca (Georgetown U) hit a single to right field in the top of the seventh. He later scored off an RBI single from Butcher. Mamatas scored in the seventh following an RBI from
Schner. With two outs and the bases loaded, Seaver King (Wingate) hit a three-run triple to
make it a one-run game. Farris followed up with another RBI triple to tie the game at seven.

Harrisonburg got out of the bottom of the seventh with a double play. In the top of the eighth,
Ficca singled to center field but two strikeouts and a flyout kept him from scoring the lead-changing run.

In the bottom of the ninth, Stocum was intentionally walked and Wickeri hit a single. Wickeri got in scoring position on a groundout from Arnold. Breen walked and loaded the bases with two outs but Rodriguez was struck out by Sean Culkin (James Madison) to send the game to extra innings.

The top of the tenth saw the Turks load the bases with one out but a strikeout and a groundout
halted Harrisonburg from scoring. The Lumberjacks couldn’t win the game in the bottom of the
tenth after two groundouts and a flyout.

Butcher gave the Turks the lead in the top of the eleventh on a sacrifice fly from Kemp. The
Lumberjacks couldn’t stay alive in the bottom of the eleventh as Culkin struck out Arnold for the
final out to win the game.

The Turks return home Saturday night to face the Charlottesville Tom Sox in an opening night rematch at 7:30 p.m.

They host the Strasburg Express in their first doubleheader of the season Sunday at 5:30 p.m.
