6/08/04 – Indiana University

Wargo, Kemp Taken on Day Two of MLB Draft Cody Wargo was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles. Joe Kemp was drafted by the Texas Rangers. BLOOMINGTON, Ind.– A pair of Indiana baseball players were selected on the second day of the 2004 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft. Cody Wargo was drafted in the 27th round by the Baltimore Orioles and Joe Kemp went to the Texas Rangers in the 42nd round. Seth Bynum and Kevin Mahar signed with the Montreal Expos and the Texas Rangers, respectively, prior to the Draft. A native of nearby Owings, Md., Wargo recently completed his eligbility and was a four-year letterwinner at catcher for the Hoosiers. He finished the 2004 season with a .243 batting average, 24 RBI, four doubles and three home runs. An impressive defensive catcher, Wargo started a total of 131 games behind the plate for Indiana. “It feels amazing,” Wargo said of being drafted by the Orioles. “It’s always been a dream of mine to play for them. I’m excited to have the chance to play in their system. Really, it’s a dream come true.” After missing the 2003 season due to injury, Kemp returned to the lineup and produced a solid season in 2004. He batted .317, the third-highest average on the team, hit seven home runs, and compiled 35 RBI. Kemp, an outfielder, also led the Hoosiers with 16 doubles. He has one season of eligibility remaining at IU should he choose not sign with the Rangers. Kemp is originally from Bowie, Md.
