Valley League Baseball > News WEEKLY NOTES – JULY 13, 2004 Harrisonburg’s Mike Mlotkowski (Oklahoma City U.) twirled a no-hitter for Southern Pitcher of the Week honors. Weekly Notes for the week July 5-July 10 Covington: This past week Matt Graziano (Florida) went 4-for-14 and batted .286 for the Lumberjacks which raises his season average to .298. Graziano also played shortstop and second base for the South in the Valley League All-Star game. Right-hander Omar Aguilar (Merced CC) made a start on July 6 and threw for seven innings while allowing only two hits, no earned runs, and fanned 12. The center fielder for Covington, Wally Crancer (Riverside CC) also played in the all-star game and went 1-for-3 with a run scored for the South. Crancer has had 11 multiple-hit games this season to lead the team and five multiple-RBI games. Front Royal: Jon Skorupski (Florida) of the Cardinals batted .321 this past week with nine hits, three runs scored, two doubles, two home runs, and five RBI. Skorupski also contributed to the Northern team in the all-star game going 1-for-3 with two runs scored. Avi Rasowsky (George Washington) joined Skorupski on the Northern all-star team and pitched for a third of an inning and struck out one. This past week Rasowsky made one starting appearance and threw for seven innings while allowing only three hits and struck out seven. Jon Love (Kennesaw State), the league leader in home runs with nine, also leads the Cardinals with eight multiple-hit games and nine multiple-RBI games. Love has a current hit streak of 10 games. Harrisonburg: Reggie Watson (Indiana) was the leading hitter for the Turks this past week while batting .429 with six hits and three runs scored. Watson also picked up another steal this past week to add to his league-leading total, now at 17. Watson played for the South in the all-star game and won the 60-yard dash (6.67 seconds) before the game in the all-star day activities. Gered Mochizuki (Yavapai JC) hit for a .400 average this past week and had 10 hits, five runs scored, two doubles and five RBI. Mochizuki is third in the league with 37 hits. Mike Mlotkowski (Oklahoma City) made one starting appearance this past week against Covington on July 8 and threw for a no-hitter and struck out 14. The Turks have eight come-from-behind wins this season and seven of those wins have been at home. Loudoun: Brandon Reichert (Tallahassee CC) batted .300 this past week with six hits, three runs scored, one double, two home runs and nine RBI. Reichert leads the Rangers with eight multiple-hit games and six multiple-RBI games, as well as the longest hit streak of the season with 12 games. Phillip Beall (Virginia Tech) was the leading hitter for the Rangers this past week going 8-for-21 with five runs scored, two doubles and a home run. Beall was the lead-off hitter for the North in the all-star game and went 1-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI. Luray: Chris Torres and Donnie Burkhalter, teammates at Cumberland University, were the leading hitters for the Wranglers this past week and had five hits and two home runs apiece. Torres also had nine multiple hit games to lead the Wranglers. In two relief appearances this week Danny Hernandez (Florida International) went 2-0 in 4 2/3 innings pitched. Hernandez allowed only one hit, no runs and struck out seven. Outfielder Dee Brown (Central Florida) had two home runs this past week and won the home run derby at the all-star game in Waynesboro, belting 14 total. New Market: Greg Sexton (William & Mary) has had the most multiple-hit games with nine for the Rebels, and the longest hitting streak with 14 games. Sexton came in as a substitute for the North in the all-star game and had one RBI and scored a run. Ben Crowell (UNC-Pembroke) was the Rebels’ leading hitter this past week going 6-for-22 with six RBI and two home runs including a lead-off in-the-park home run against Harrisonburg on July 9. Marion Knowles (North Florida) started at third base for the North All-Stars and was named MVP for the team while going 1-for-2 with one RBI and two walks. Staunton: Quinn Stewart (Louisiana State) had six hits this past week with four runs scored, three home runs, and seven RBI. Stewart started in left field for the Southern All-Stars and went 1-for-2 with two RBI and was named the MVP for the South. Shane Justis (Towson) was the leading hitter for the Braves this past week with a .391 average and had nine hits, five runs, one double, and three RBI. Justis also leads the Braves with nine multiple-hit games, including four games with three hits. Phillip Morrison (Mercer) and Derek Blacksher (Panola JC) both made a starting appearance this past week, both picked up a win, and both threw for eight innings. Morrison allowed no earned runs, four hits and fanned seven. Blacksher allowed no earned runs, three hits, and struck out nine. Blacksher also made an appearance in the third inning for the Southern All-Stars. Waynesboro: Matt Bransfield (Notre Dame) batted .400 this past week for the Generals with 10 hits, five runs, three doubles, a home run, and eight RBI. Bransfield came in as a catcher for the Southern All-Stars and has eight multiple-hit games for the Generals. Brandon Selvog (Tennessee Tech) started at third base for the South in the all-star game and scored one of the South’s four runs. This past week Selvog batted .357 for the Generals and scored five runs with a double and two RBI. Matt Fairweather (Catawba) and Josh Schwartz (Rowan) both threw complete games this past week. Fairweather allowed no earned runs, two hits and struck out 11. Schwartz allowed only one earned run, four hits and fanned nine. Winchester: Bruce Sprowl (Louisiana State) was a substitute in center field for the Northern All-Stars and scored a run and had a RBI. Sprowl recently ended the longest hit streak of the Valley League with a 16-game stint and also has the most multiple-hit games in the league with 14. Kyle Walter (Bucknell) was the leading hitter of the week for the Royals batting .375 with six hits, two runs scored, two doubles and a triple. Mike Wagner (Vanderbilt) started for the North in the all-star game and also pitched well in this past week, throwing eight innings in one start and giving up no earned runs and only one hit while striking out 15. Woodstock: Tim McKay (Winthrop) was the key hitter this past week for the River Bandits as he batted .400 with eight hits, three doubles and two RBI. Matt Mallory (Vernon RJC) picked up a win this past week going 8 1/3 innings and allowing two earned runs, eight hits and fanned 11. Bryan Hierlmeier (South Florida) started in right field for the South in the all-star game and also has 11 multiple hit-games for the River Bandits. Alexander Gonzalez (Barry) made two appearances this past week for Woodstock and threw the fifth inning for the Southern All-Stars. In his two trips to the mound for the River Bandits, Gonzalez threw for 12 innings and struck out 19 to move him into second in the league with 51 total strikeouts. Alumni Short Hops… Jon Zuber (Harrisonburg) has been named as an assistant coach at California Berkeley… Zuber played 68 games in his major-league career with the Phillies…
