WEEKLY NOTES for the week of July 12-July 18, 2004 Covington: Ryan Taylor (West Virginia State) was a key hitter for the Lumberjacks this past week batting .444 with eight hits, one home run, and six RBI. Sam Walls (N.C. State) threw on July 14 against Woodstock and picked up the win in eight innings of work. Walls allowed only four hits, no earned runs and struck out eight. Chance Dobbs (Bridgewater) also picked up a win for Covington this week in four and a third innings, giving up only two hits and no earned runs. Front Royal: The Cardinals hit eight home runs as a team in the past week including one by Thomas Giles (Catawba), two from Jon Love (Kennesaw State) and Jon Skorupski (Florida), and three hit by Seth Steinhauer (Florida). Love had 11 hits this past week along with four doubles to compliment the two home runs and four RBI. The Cardinals’ closer, Derrik Lutz (George Washington), picked up another save this past week and now has 11 to lead the league. Harrisonburg: Kevin Koski (Southern Illinois) hit .474 this past week with nine hits, two doubles and four RBI. Ryan Parker (Indiana) also batted over .400 for the week and had 10 hits, two doubles, a home run and seven RBI. Tim Gudex (Iowa) threw for a complete game this past week, picking up the win and allowing only three earned runs and fanned 12. Will Mann (Florida Atlantic) and Damian Salcedo (Oklahoma State) also picked up wins for the Turks while both allowing three earned runs and Mann struck out eight and Salcedo fanned 11. Loudoun: In only three games played this past week, both Phillip Beall (Virginia Tech) and Rick Santo (Florida CC-Jacksonville) both batted .385 this past week for the Rangers and had five hits a piece. Shawn Barrett (Pasco-Hernando CC) picked up a win in only one and two-thirds innings pitched. The Rangers’ schedule has been cut short recently due to weather conditions but will have a double-header against Waynesboro on July 26. Luray: Donnie Burkhalter (Cumberland University) had two home runs this past week and five RBI to bat .412 for the week and now has 25 RBI on the year to lead the Wranglers. Both Jon Kirby (Lee) and Phillip Whitten (Tampa) picked up wins this week in relief appearances and combined for only five innings of work. They also allowed only one hit a piece and no earned runs. Dee Brown (Central Florida) batted .412 with seven hits and an RBI to boost his season average to .242 in only 18 games with the Wranglers. New Market: Arin Gelletly (Penn State) was the leading hitter for the Rebels this past week going four-for-eleven with two doubles, a triple, one home run, and three RBI. Rawell Rivera (Wabash Valley CC) had four hits, two doubles, a home run, and seven RBI to lead the team this week. The Rebels went 4-0 in the last week and Stephen Faris (Clemson), Justin Pigott (Mississippi State), and Tim Norton (Connecticut) were the winning pitchers in three of their contests. All three pitchers allowed no more than three earned runs and combined for 17 strikeouts. Staunton: George Hanger (Tusculum) was the Braves’ leading hitter this past week batting .412 with seven hits, three doubles and four RBI. Jeff Beachum (Middle Tennessee State) had eight hits including four doubles and two RBI for a .348 average for the week. Drake Wade (Central Florida) had two doubles, two home runs, three RBI, and three stolen bases this past week. Hunter Abercrombie (Talahassee CC) picked up a win for the Braves in six and two-thirds innings allowing only two earned runs and five hits. Waynesboro: Brent McWhorter (William & Mary) was the key hitter for the Generals this past week with a .286 average and four hits along with three RBI. The catcher Matt Bransfield (Notre Dame) had three hits, one home run, and three RBI. Josh Drew (Georgia Southwestern) went 1-1 on the week for the Generals in two relief appearances and pitched just three innings while allowing one earned run, four hits and struck out three. Winchester: Brandon Masters (Georgia) batted .526 this past week and had 10 hits in 19 at bats including three doubles and three RBI. Matt DiBlasi (Florida State) went 1-1 on the week for the Royals and posted a 1.29 ERA. In two relief appearances DiBlasi gave up only four hits, one earned run and struck out eight. Brent Hitz (George Mason) also went 1-1 on the mound in two starting roles, pitching eight and two-thirds innings and giving up five earned runs and fanned 11. Woodstock: Tim McKay (Winthrop) batted .467 this past week with seven hits, two doubles and two RBI. McKay is now batting .271 with 32 hits on the year for the expansion River Bandits. Adam Calderone (Florida Southern) batted .294 with five hits and two stolen bases to give him 16 in 20 attempts this year. Chase Lirette (South Florida) in one starting appearance this week had a 0.00 ERA and threw for five innings giving up no earned runs, five hits and struck out four.
