Pitchers Stymie Harrisonburg, 5-1 By Dustin Dopirak Daily News Record Luray, VA – The Luray Wranglers have seen big leads go by the wayside in a hurry this season, losing two games in which they took the lead into the ninth inning. For that reason, they didn’t feel the slightest bit comfortable with a 5-1 advantage over the Harrisonburg Turks through six innings Wednesday night. "We had a meeting bevore the seventh inning," Luray Center fieldertyson Auer (Central Florida) said. "He (manager Mike Bocock) just told us not to let up." But because of their pitching and Turks’ quiet bats, the Wranglers didn’t have to pour on any more runs. Starter Marcus Davis, a Luray High School graduate now playing for Virginia Commonwealth, struck out four batters, yielding just five hits and one run in five innings, and reliever Drew Shamrock (Denison) struck out eight, allowing just one hit in four shutout innings to close out the Wranglers’ 5-1 win in the Valley League game. Luray is 1-3, the Turks are 2-3. With pinpoint control and good movement on his fastball and slider, Shamrock was virtually untouchable. He struck out five straight batters at one point and allowed just five of the 14 batters he faced to put the ball in play. "I didn’t feel like velocity-wise I was there," Shamrock said. "But everything else was working together nicely. I was hitting my spots and that really helped me." The Wranglers scored two runs in the third inning when second baseman Jordan Toliver (Memphis) scored on a groundout by third baseman Danny Murphy (Jacksonville) and Auer scored on a groundout by first baseman Adam Amar (Memphis). They got three more runs in the fifth. Harrisonburg 000 010 000 — 1 5 3 Luray 002 030 00x — 5 6 0 Fussell, Wheeler (4), Butts (7) and Sluder; Davis, Shamrock (6) and Taylor. WP-Davis. LP-Fussell.
