VBL All-Stars Battle to a 2-2 Tie

7/9/2006 – Valley League Baseball News

Valley League Baseball News Tyler Brown’s RBI single in the bottom of the ninth knotted the score at 2-2 as the 2006 Valley Baseball League All-Star game ended in a tie on Sunday, July 9 at Harrisonburg’s Veteran’s Memorial Stadium. The Southern All-Stars, composed of players from Covington, Harrisonburg, Staunton, Waynesboro, and Woodstock, jumped out to an early lead in the game with Waynesboro’s Adam White scoring after singling, advancing on a wild pitch, and advancing on two consecutive errors. The Northern All-Stars, composed of players from Front Royal, Haymarket, Luray, New Market, and Winchester, tied the game in the third when New Market’s Pete Antoske stole home on a double steal attempt. The North took its first lead in the seventh when Front Royal’s Jordan Karnofsky belted a solo home run. The South, however, came back to tie the game in the ninth on an RBI single by Staunton’s Tyler Brown. Because both teams had already been required to play all position players and the teams were running short on available pitchers, the game was halted after nine innings as a tie game. Karnofsky earned Most Valuable Player honors for the North, going 2-for-2 with a home run, which was the game’s only extra base hit. Antoske finished 1-for-3 with a run and two stolen bases. Brown went 1-for-2 with an RBI, while Woodstock’s Shayne Moody was named the Southern MVP. The pre-game festivities also included a home run derby, which was won by Haymarket’s Michael Tollison, and a 60-yard dash, which was claimed by White. Regular season Valley League action commences on Monday with a full slate of games due to previous rainouts. New Market visits Luray, Haymarket at Front Royal, Covington travels to Woodstock, Staunton will entertain Winchester, and Waynesboro hosts Harrisonburg. All five games will start at 7:30 p.m. A box score of the all-star game is available at http://www.valleyleaguebaseball.com/Stats/12/stars.htm
