VALLEY LEAGUE PLAYOFF SCENARIOS

07/28/2008 – Valley Baseball League Newsroom

With Harrisonburg defeating New Market on Sunday night, the eight-team Valley League playoff field is now set. However, all of the matchups and even the starting date are not yet determined heading into the final day of competition on Monday. Two of the four opening-round matchups have been determined as Fauquier has clinched the #3 seed in its first-ever Valley League playoff appearance. The Gators will host #6 Covington in the best-of-three series. Meanwhile, #4 Winchester will entertain #5 Staunton in another cross-division series. The final two pairings will depend on Monday’s final four games. Luray, currently in first overall at 30-13, will host second-place Waynesboro (29-14) at 7:30 p.m. If Luray wins, the Wranglers wrap up the top overall seed. However, if Waynesboro wins, the Generals force a tie for the top spot. VBL rules require a one-game playoff in the case of a tie for the top spot, regardless of the head-to-head record. Waynesboro would host this game on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. by virtue of a 4-0 record against Luray. The other game of importance on Monday will be Covington traveling to Harrisonburg at 7:30 p.m. If Harrisonburg emerges victorious, then the Turks will be #7 and Haymarket claims #8. However, if Harrisonburg loses, then the Senators will grab the #7 spot thanks to a 4-0 record against Harrisonburg this season. The Turks would then take the #8 and final spot. The four series are each best of three with games one and three hosted by the better seed. Those series will begin on Tuesday night should Luray win on Monday. However, the opening round will be pushed back a day to Wednesday should Waynesboro force an extra game on Monday night.
