Turks Alumni to Join 2010 Coaching Staff

02/10/2010 – Turks Tidbits

JMU and TURKS Alumni Larry Mitchell to join TURKS Coaching Staff Written by Megan Kogut James Madison University Intern This summer will be a special welcome home for Larry Mitchell. The former Harrisonburg Turk and James Madison University Duke will be returning to Harrisonburg to join the Turks coaching staff for the 2010 season. Although it will be a different stadium Mitchell will feel right at home being back on the field that both his college team and summer league team now shares at the brand new JMU Veterans Memorial Park. Mitchell, a Charlottesville native, increased his baseball background when he was drafted in the 42nd round by the Seattle Mariners in 1989. Instead, Mitchell chose to attend James Madison University where he landed the No. 37 best college pitching prospect by Baseball America Magazine in 1991. Also in 1991, Mitchell was selected to try out for team USA’s Olympic baseball and was selected to play for the Shenandoah Valley League All-Star team with the Harrisonburg Turks. In 1992, Mitchell was selected in the 5th round by the Philadelphia Phillies. In 1995, Mitchell was rated as the No. 10 prospect in the Phillies organization, ultimately making his Major League debut in 1996. From years 1997-1999, Mitchell also pitched for the New York Yankees, Baltimore Orioles, Chicago White Sox organizations and the Oaxaca Guerreros of the Mexican Professional Baseball League. After ending his professional baseball career in 2000, Mitchell returned to his Alma Mater, Charlottesville High School, where he was the varsity head baseball coach. In 2006, Mitchell served as the pitching coach on the varsity baseball staff at St. Anne’s-Belfield school. Currently, Mitchell lives in Waynesboro, Va. with his wife and three children while participating in JMU’s adult degree program. The Turks look forward to an exciting season of baseball with Coach Mitchell.
